Walsh Thinks Darko Can Blossom With Knicks

Knicks general manager Donnie Walsh believes that Darko Milicic can blossom in New York.

"He was a very skilled player when he was drafted," Walsh said, according to the New York Post. "I think the thing that's held him back is he's been thought of as a guy that has to play with his back to the basket. And everywhere he's been, people have tried to do that.

"I don't think that will be the case here," he added. "The way [coach] Mike [D'Antoni] plays, the fact that he's a skilled, fairly athletic, long big man who can run the floor and can dribble the ball, shoot the ball, pass the ball, he might fit into this system better. That's what I'm hoping."

Milicic was the second pick in the 2003 NBA Draft behind LeBron James and ahead of Carmelo Anthony.

The Knicks acquired Milicic from the Grizzlies in a draft night trade involving Quentin Richardson.

Darko never should have been drafted that early but he is still fairly young (25) i think and could be a useful big dude.He rebounds and blocks shots when given minutes even though he throws bricks at the free throw line. Not like the Knicks are going anywhere anytime soon anyways.

I think his stats, scoring in particular will inflate because of D'Antoni's coaching.

Worked for the suns.

I don't know what it was like in Memphis, but the system in Detroit was very rigid, structured, and Darko's development was seriously impeded by both Larry Brown and a stacked big man rotation. Who knows, maybe Darko benefits from D'Antoni's free-flowing system and less big men to compete for minutes against.

Zachus pretty much nailed it... he was destined to fail in detroit.
he wasnt going to get playing time, Larry Brown is an ass, and Detroit was a championship team... being a 19 year old european kid who cant speak english didnt help either.
he got a second chance in Memphis, and IMO thats when he began his career.
he's 25, has learned a ton over the last 6 years, and he's going to a team that makes shitpiles actually look decent, NY.
playing under D'Antoni, he'll get to run and shoot and have little responsibility... he'll love it. I'm sure he'll put up some decent numbers this season, so Walsh is pretty accurate in his belief that Darko will flourish. He will never live up to the hype that made him #2 pick in one of the most talented draft classes ever, but i wouldnt be surprised to see him turn some heads this year and have a few people eat crow.

On a team like the Knicks, there are roughly four players better than him. He will score but I wouldn't call it blossoming, I'd call it dependance on bad players because your too cheap to get any good ones!
