Ray Allen calls out David West

Ray Allen thinks David West made a mistake choosing Indy

David West is a Pacer, a big pickup for an Indiana team that barely scrapped into the playoffs last year. They picked up an All-Star power forward who is as good a pick-and-pop big as there is in the game.

But West was almost a Celtic and would have been key to their run at a ring with the big three.

In the end, West chose two years, $20 million from the Pacers over three years, $29 million from the Celtics (it was a complex sign-and-trade that got slowed down because the Hornets didn’t want Jermaine O’Neal back, and we can’t blame them). Ray Allen doesn’t get West’s choice and spoke his mind to ESPNBoston.com.

“Once it got down to the end, I think his ego kicked back in,” Allen said. “He wanted the dollars. I guess it comes down to ‘What is a championship worth to you?’

“Think of all the guys who have made $20 million and could be considered one of the best ever, but they get chided because they never won. We [the Big Three] all had to do less when we won. We’re still taking less to make it work. But it’s worth it. No one can ever say to KG, Paul or me, ‘You guys never got your ring.’”

We don’t know what went into West’s decision — money, lifestyle, that he saw the Pacers as a team with potential down the line. But to call out a guy’s championship heart is pretty harsh.

And as Tom Ziller reminds us, Allen didn’t take less money to come to Boston, he was in the middle of a five-year deal and made $16 million in 2008. He signed an extension at $10 million per.

Ray Allen has just reached the cranky old man phase of his career and is holding nothing back.

lol shut up ray ray, west went with indy because they offered him a starting gig and opportunity to improve on an up and coming team rather than ride the pine watching douchebag old man garnett take most of the minutes.....

and really money? last time i checked 29 mill guaranteed is more than 20......so doesnt that defeat the purpose of his logic?

also if u wanted to average it out per year, the contracts are pretty close to being the same.....good on david west to pick an upcoming team rather than an aging team of bitter old men who are no longer a top 5 team in the league

pacers have a better chance at a ring than the celtics do.
you can quote me on this

why do athletes open their mouths? they'd be so much more respectable if they tucked their opinions away from the public eye. keep stuff like this in the locker room where it's okay to make yourself look like a complete idiot.

ray, come on, i held you in such high regard.

Superjudge 12-21-2011 12:17 PM

totally what I was thinking when I read that

Did the Pacers land D12 or something? :confused2:

ray is talking as if the C's actually have a chance to win a championship again.
they arent even top 3 in the east. and after this year, they will probably fall out of the top 5. too old. why would west want to join a team on the decline?

I disagree.... if they are healthy come playoff time, they are a favourite....

no... but on their level and they'll get their fair share of calls cause they know how to grind it down to a snail's pace.

INSIDER 12-21-2011 07:29 PM

im not saying they arent good... just saying i dont have them in the top 3 in the east.
i'd put a healthy NY over them at this given point in time. i dont know why, i have a big feeling about NY this season.
Boston is old news.

I'm actually curious to see what happens if Boston struggles early in the year. Both Garnett and Ray Allen are on expiring contracts.

Will Ainge stick with the old guys no matter what happens? Even if they are in 7th or 8th place at the trade deadline?

If he lets them expire, Boston will have a fair amount of cap space to start rebuilding with Rondo.

But if he trades them (that is, rents them) to other teams, he might be able to get a pick or two back.

Ainge had a lot of luck and help in building the current roster, so I'm curious to see what he does over the next year and a half while he has tough decisions to make. I think it would be hillarious if he "pulled a Dumars" and fucked everything up and turned the Celts to shit.

Ainge has already gotten off to a rocky start with the Jeff Green deal. Some bad luck there, but it seems like it could be one of those bad omens.

emphasis on BETTER CHANCE.....and for the record i think neither are contenders.
pacers have a LOT of depth and i was very impressed with them in the playoffs last year. even though they lost, they played the bulls very tough. and they're a better team than they were last year
a short season also works against the old celtics
