I just want to know what is the purpose of declaring for the draft when you can sign to any NBA team if you really want to?

I believe it would come down to salaries for the most part.
You might even 'have' to go through the draft to play in the nba (or a few seasons over seas, or something). I'm sure there are some rules about it somewhere lol.

Not an expert, but I guess before some age you have to declare for draft in order to play. So you cant just sign to any team you want after college. After some age (or there might be other rules too) you dont have to declare for draft to be signed. This usually happens for international players who are coming to NBA after playing several years as pro somewhere else. If you declare for draft and dont get drafted, you are also free to sign with anyone.

Is there anything wikipedia can't do?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The NBA Draft is an annual event in which the thirty teams from the National Basketball Association (NBA) can select players who wish to join the league. These players are usually amateur college basketball players, but in recent drafts a higher number of international and high school players have been drafted. However, starting in 2006, high school players were not eligible to enter the draft directly after graduating high school. The rules now state that high school players will gain eligibility for draft selection one year after their high school graduation and they must also be at least 19 years old as of the end of the calendar year of the draft. Foreign players who have never played basketball for a United States high school or college are also eligible if they are at least 19 years old. The Draft usually takes place at the end of June, during the NBA off-season. Since 2001, the Draft has been held in New York City.
