Players call their own fouls

Do you think such a system could work in the NBA?

I think that it would for sure. You simply have to allow for a video review if the defensive player "challenges" and attach a penalty to wrong on a challenge

Such as on a failed challenge the other team gets 2 free throws and if in the act, the ball as well.

I think it would lead to fewer fouls being called and a fairer game with fewer/no superstar calls.

All you would need is a few techs constantly ready to rule on challenges to prevent game slowdowns and refs to call less subjective things like traveling and out of bounds.

Thoughts?

Is this a joke?

bjjs 11-23-2012 09:45 AM

I think it's a ridiculous notion; however, it makes for interesting discussion which I don't have a lot of time for at work. A few quick points.

1. "Superstar calls" happen in pick-up, they would most definitely still occur. These aren't a product of the NBA.

2. Travelling is subjective

3. Out of Bounds is actually subjective

4. Their would be no offensive fouls - these don't happen in pick-up basketball.

What would happen without officials is the same superstars would rule the league; moreso actually. You would have some really physical match-ups when you have younger guys trying to test the top dogs, and fighting would be a regular occurance.

a system like this simply plays into the greater mental weaknesses and deficiencies of the whole.

Guys can't accept that they fouled a guy, and players don't like having offensive calls against them because it hurts their ego to know that they can't score on the guy guarding um. I call them in pick up, and when people complain I tell them straight up, "you can't score on me bro, you don't have game"

heh... ya, but i can get in anyones head, or at least i could when I played....i wouldnt say shit now....but then, i also would rather die than take a charge now too..."wanna score bro, all yours man"

hahaha

this is pretty ridiculous on the whole and will never happen.
one option is to have the refs employed by a seperate firm, not by the NBA.
the refs will be paid and bonused on a game by game basis - not a fixed salary. paid after each game - after going through an audit for fairness and correctness of calls and non-calls.

Blaze 11-23-2012 01:41 PM

Lol pick up ball alone shows how flawed this is.

d00little 11-23-2012 01:45 PM

I think refs do a pretty good job for the most part. One thing I would like to have is it make it mandatory for refs to have to sit at the post game press conference and answer questions from reporters. This would make them a little bit more accountable for their calls.

What a valuable statement.

That isn't even a valid argument.

There is NO referee in this case and they have no review system.

1. "Superstar calls" - upon review would these not be caught? If not, why would we be worse off?

2. Yes but as I mentioned at the top, this would still be called by a live ref

3. Yes this could also be called by a live ref

4. Good point, did not think of this. Would have to come up with something for this (or same system)

The idea is to decrease the impact of the referee on the game and give them less power

I would argue this would help change that culture because if you want to "challenge" the call. Video replay comes in and you are still called for the foul PLUS assessed a penalty.

Now you are constantly causing your team penalties because you don't accept/don't understand your fouls.

This should promote learning or a lack of complaining when it starts to damage the team.

I'm sick of whiny bitches too and this would make them accountable.

Just because it is unlikely doesn't make it ridiculous.

With what you describe would it not be better to have an independent body auditing the refs?

I don't see how having an outside employer makes them any better or less likely to be corrupt.

having an independant body auditing the refs would work... i'm all for that.

i think the fact that the refs work for the NBA makes the curruption conspiracy theories even more powerful. what does the NBA gain from having its superstar teams winning and making the playoffs? Everything.
what does an outside employer gain from having a small market team win and the superstar teams lose? nothing at all.

Where does this outside employer get their money from to pay these refs.

Superjudge 11-23-2012 04:07 PM

from the nba of course, and then, they too, will inevitably be corrupted.
