Pistons Pistons Pursuing Stan Van Gundy With Offer Of Full Control

I'd rather go to Golden State..

Quote:
The Detroit Pistons are pursuing Stan Van Gundy with a lucrative offer to assume complete control of basketball operations in addition to become their head coach.

The Pistons are competing with the Golden State Warriors, who are aggressively pursuing Van Gundy for their coaching position.

The Pistons have a far less appealing roster than the Warriors, but he would have far more control in their organization. The Warriors have an entrenched general manager in Bob Myers and an active owner in Joe Lacob, in addition to Jerry West serving as a consultant.

The Pistons parted ways with Joe Dumars this season.

Tim Kawakami of the Mercury News reports that Van Gundy asked the Warriors for total control of the roster, but they declined making that opportunity available.

GS already has an identity and lofty expectations, and if they aren't willing to give him full control then I'm not sure that's a position he would want to take. He wouldn't have time to grow things the way he wants at the expense of taking a step back in terms of winning.

Detroit with full control however...he's got what he had in Orlando except without the egocentric center complaining he doesn't get the ball enough.

Detroit has some nice pieces for a coach like Van Gundy.

I'd rather SVG go to the Warriors. If he picks the Pistons, he would probably be able to turn that team into a decent winner since he is a great coach. His first assignment would be trading Jennings and Smith since they are garbage.

Pistons need a ton more help then the Warriors. Stan's a good coach, I think he can help a lot in Detroit.

If svg can make Drummond into the same player he made Dwight aside from the bitchiness, watch out.

At least its in the right direction for Detroit

Damn. Missed the boat on this one. But given he was offered full control, I don't think he would've came here anyways.

I didn't know this

Van Gundy joins a short list of elite coaches who also serve as the personnel bosses for their franchises. San Antonio’s Gregg Popovich and the Los Angeles Clippers’ Doc Rivers also have final say on player personnel.

Nice to know we could have at least had a shot at going after someone else more worthwhile if we hadn't given out an extension a day after we got eliminated.

Who here would prefer a coach having full control as opposed to a traditional management style?

Big coup for the Pistons. I fully expect SVG's first order of business to be attempting to pull a Masai and just getting rid of the cancer first. Smith and Jennings gotta go, so I expect them to be gone by training camp. On the flip side though, Monroe is due for an extension, and if they cant get rid of Smith before they have to extend Drummond, they may end up trading Monroe for parts, and keeping Smith as a PF. Maybe SVG can get through to him and play up to his potential, if that's even possible, then DET's frontcourt would be scary. But its Smith, so its unlikely.

This is honestly the best thing that could have happened to Drummond though. SVG is going to turn Drummond into a top 5 player. You read it here first.

That's why association in NBA 2K always go so swell
jk

but it makes sense to give it to a coach since there will be no conflict and if a coach honestly thinks a player's gtg they will.

Imagine if Bargs had to play for a coach who had the power to tell him "get atleast two rebounds a quarter or you're out", instead of what Casey got with "Get atleast two rebound a quarter or nothing".

But at the same time if coaches really believed in a horrible player like Rasul Butler or Salmons (Which Casey prolly did) they wouldn't get waived by the GM and stayed on the team.

I feel that the control provides a coach with a sense of immunity that might be maladaptive for a team. Of course the coaches that are granted this opportunity are upper tier and not casey

But I'm confused as to what keeps them in check. What the hell can a GM do when he unloads his responsibilities onto the coach. Does it stretch to the owner then?

You only miss the boat if one is standing at the dock waiting. SVG not coming is not a bad thing either.

Would he play back up to JV? I like Amir and prefer 2Pat with his ability to stretch the floor at the 4 spot. Maybe one can rotate the 4 with match-ups. I was going to say that "I think I might prefer a rookie like Mitch McGary as a back-up" - but Greg is only 23. I'm thinking he wants to be a starter with starter minutes but he's not strong enough defensively to take a spot from the current 2. Unless Amir backs up the 4

He'd be a pretty ideal add. Still young enough to develop with the core, but already developed enough to noticeably contribute, especially offensively.

Seems quite opposite to your post...

Quote:
The first major decision of Stan Van Gundy's tenure with the Detroit Pistons will be the restricted free agency of Greg Monroe.

Van Gundy is a big fan of Monroe's game and called him once a deal was struck on Tuesday evening.

The Pistons' ownership is also believed to be fond of Monroe.

With Monroe, Andre Drummond and Josh Smith, the Pistons had difficulties spreading the floor with the lack of shooting in the frontcourt.
