Pistons Pistons hire Maurice Cheeks

Quote:
Former All-Star point guard Maurice Cheeks is getting his third shot as an NBA head coach.

Cheeks, an assistant in Oklahoma City for the past four seasons, on Monday formally agreed to take over as coach of the Detroit Pistons as the replacement for the ousted Lawrence Frank, according to sources close to the process.

Not a fan of Maurice Cheeks at all. I think he is very overrated, i get that he had success early on but has done absolutely nothing in the past what? 5-6 years of his career.

Pistons keep making questionable decisions.

He's not a good Head Coach. I don't understand why these bad coaches just keep getting recycled. There's better talent out there.

Cheeks is a players coach and good with the young players. that probably why they hired him.

after that championship its been down hill for dumars,

this guy is not a good coach, I guess maybe Dumars wants to target the 1st overall pick this year, in that case this is an amazing hire

I agree... guy knows how to deal with people, and it sure looks like that detroit rebuild is starting to come together. It could easily go the way of a Sactown mess with a coach that doesn't command the attention of his players... I think Cheeks is a good fit... for now.

Dumars is excellent. The only problem is that people memories are only long enough to ask what have you done for me lately. Iverson move not included.

Can you elaborate on Dumars? Excellent? You can give him praise, but he presided and brought mediocrity to the franchise beyond the Iverson move, but I digress. I'm interested in the argument on Dumars being excellent.

His decisions the last 5yrs have been atrocious. Starting CV/Gordon contracts. That team has less vision/direction than we do.

No. They should have gone after Hollins and Shaw. And if they couldn't get either, then look for an experience assistant coach who's been sought after, and hire him for 2 years as the young Pistons continue to develop.

The Pistons could very well be in the playoffs next year if they're able to add Oladipo and Iggy to the team. But I think they'll come to the conclusion next year that Knight just isn't a starting PG in the NBA and will be looking for other solutions next year to fill out that hole in their starting 5.

They're in a really good spot now though with a lot of cap room and Drummond/Monroe to build around. I think they will really compliment eachother well once they get a competent coach and wing players, and obviously more playing time together

Won a championship.

Made some excellent draft choices and trades (Prince, Wallaces, Hamilton, Drummond, Monroe, Knight etc.). The worst things I see he has done is Darko (and everyone in the world would have taken him Top 5) and Iverson. He got a team on the decline to win again. Now he's in a rebuilding cycle. These things happen. I don't see Gordon and CV being that terrible because the team had already fallen off by then. Dunno.. maybe I would be less patient as a Piston fan but at least the guy has proven he can build a winner which is more than any GM in this city could have said.

Joe Dumars - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As for the last 5 years. His drafting has been good and he hasn't traded any top talent that wasn't past its prime and overpaid. So the bad trade thing is only a certain someone still pissed off at Calderon.

Agreed, he's put them in a much better place than we're currently in. Their two big core pieces are young, stud frontcourt pieces still relatively cheap.... JV lines up to that but he's surrounded by a capped out mix of mediocrity
