Celtics Pierce does not expect to be back in Boston next season

Makes sense, since his contract is only partially garanteed.

Quote:
Save for Paul Pierce. At least, according to Comcast New England’s Greg Dickerson. Because only about a third of Paul Pierce’s $15.3 million deal is guaranteed for 2013-14, rumors abound that team personnel boss Danny Ainge may want to cut ties with the star to save money, or deal him elsewhere to prop up an aging roster. Which is why Pierce, according to Dickerson, thinks his days in Boston are numbered. Here’s what the Celtics sideline reporter told his viewers on Sunday:

"I don't think they will (bring Pierce back)," Dickerson said Sunday on CSNNE. "And I know that the company that Paul Pierce hangs around in, they do not believe – and I don't think Paul Pierce believes – that he is going to be brought back next year at $15 million.

"I know for a fact that people around Paul Pierce have pretty much resigned themselves to the fact that he's played his final game in a Boston Celtics uniform. Again, Paul wants to stay – obviously for $15 million, but he wants to finish his career in a Celtics uniform."

Why would the Rockets sign him? Unless they plan to play Harden at SG. You dont move an emerging talent like Parsons to the bench at this point.

He should go to the Clippers or Memphis. Either choice would make them instant championship contenders, and MEM favorites.

This.

If Boston and Pierce are going to part ways, then Memphis makes a lot of sense, at least on paper.

For me, the interesting question is not that they might part ways, because that can make sense for both sides, depending on what they value and how it is done. If it's done right, Boston can find ways to justify it, and Pierce might even be able to benefit from it, even if he says he wants to retire as a Celtic. He could feel a whole lot differently if he is playing in round 3 of the playoffs for the Grizz or Clipps next year. The question, for me at least, is how does this go down?

Would Boston ever buy him out? That's the kind of situation that would be awkward. It wouldn't even leave the Celts with enough cap space to make any moves of significance and thus is not worth it.

And, what can they reasonably expect to get for Pierce via a trade? The only kind of trades where I see Boston getting some decent value that justifies ditching Pierce is if they bring in an impact player via S&T, like Millsap or Jefferson. But if they do that, would Utah be willing to agree to waive Pierce? Boston would have to send Utah (or any other team they trade with) some sweetner to get them to give Pierce his freedom.

Aside from a S&T situation, I don't see many scenarios that make sense. That is, the Celts getting a valuable return worth justifying the move, while Pierce's contract goes to a team that will let him go so that he can sign wherever he wants.

It makes sense, the next draft is too good to miss this opportunity. Is Rondo projected to come back before the season? If not, blow it up, let Rondo properly heal up, trade/cut every key player except Rondo/Bradley/Green/youngsters. Draft in the top 5 next year.

As for destinations, Brooklyn makes a lot of sense to me as a Garnett destination. They might not want to trade him to a division team i guess. Other than that, he'd be a great fit. And so would Paul Pierce if he is cut and signs there for less.

Just out of curiosity, and since the Miami Heat are notorious for it, is it possible that PP shows up there next year? And along these lines, there is rumblings that Boozer will be amnestied - does that mean he may end up with Miami as well? I could personally see both of those vets ending up there on the vet min.

Some people hold on to too much in sports and forget its a business where they have to try to win. Pierce won't really help that anymore more than not at 15 mil :P

No, Boozer will not end up on Miami.

My memory is foggy on all the details but...

When a player is amnestied, teams make offers on him, like the Clippers did with Billups. Boozer has to go to the team that makes the highest bid. The teams under the cap have the ability to make the highest bids, and one of them will almost certainly get him. They will probably offer up a few million for Boozer. Why not? Boozer at $3 or $4 million a year is a steal. Dozens of teams would have to pass on him before he could consider Miami.

why don't we just wait to do that? amnesty Bargnani and sign boozer with the remaining cap? (once he's amnestied) instead of trading Bargnani for boozer's horrendous contract
