Lakers Phil: Kobe isn't Jordan

Agreed.

Quote:
With Kobe Bryant having won five NBA titles, one away from Michael Jordan’s six, the comparisons between the two are inevitable. But Phil Jackson, who coached Bryant’s Lakers and Jordan’s Bulls to all 11 of their combined titles, thinks Jordan is in his own stratosphere and that the conversations comparing the two stars should stop.

"Kobe has patterned himself after Michael, and there are a lot of identical things there,” Jackson told the Los Angeles Times, “but it's one thing to hope to be like him, it's another thing to be like him."

Kobe Bryant earns high praise from Phil Jackson, but the Lakers coach says his current star should not be compared to Michael Jordan. (AP photo)"I'm with (ESPN's) Bill Simmons on this," he added. "We have to take Michael Jordan out of the equation. Stop comparing anyone to Michael Jordan. It's just not fair. He was remarkable. ...

"(Kobe) doesn't shoot the same percentage (.455) as Michael (.497). He has the same characteristics as Michael, but he's not the same player. It takes nothing away from him — he's a great player in his own right."

It's completely accurate. However, in Kobe's mind, that does take something away from Kobe, I would guess. If he is speaking the truth to get under Kobe's skin, I'm not sure it works. I doubt he wants ballhog Kobe back in the equation, and that's just what he might get.

There will never be another MJ, and there will never be another Kobe either.

I don't think Kobe's reached his own status yet. Not in my mind yet.

When I watche MJ I knew what I was watching. When I watch Kobe, I don't get that same feeling. Great player but not greatest ever.

Every decade has a MJ type player. Last decade's MJ was Kobe.

Regardless, I like what Phil is doing here. It gives Kobe more motivation to cement himself as one of the all-time greats.

As much as I hate Kobe I have to admit that he's the only player since MJ that has just left me incredulous with some of the plays that he has made.

Not saying Kobe's better but it must be mentioned that zone defense wasn't what it is today. The Chicago bulls didn't really have decent opponents since the great teams (detroit, Boston and LA) were already in decline. Also the style of play the time was more one on one. There will never be a another jordan because the game is different now, plain and simple

Yeah.. That's just what I think about Kobe.

He's good, really good, but he's not Jordan. But I also think Kobe is underrated.

The game is for sure different and don't forget they even created the "Jordan rules" to slow him down but even that didn't work. So as he's questionable in his private life and after playing time life, none is "like Mike"

While Kobe may not be Jordan I have no doubt someone will come along and surpass him...it's just how it is.

I think that there are a couple of guys who could have had chances at playing to his level in recent memory in Vince, Kobe, Lebron (I'm not going to make an exhaustive list here).

Some guys just haven't had the luck that Jordan had (right team, right time) or the effort and drive to succeed.

It will happen, it will just take a while for all the balls to bounce the right way.

When you watch a laker game now. Your eyes tend to watch the whole team play.
I remember watching Buls games back in the day. And your eyes never left MJ. Even when he never had the ball, you were left wondering what this guy was gonna do.

One can only dream of a player like that coming back to the NBA.

LOL! Kobe underrated? Hardly...

Regardless, he can't even see Jordan's level, let alone be on it.
