Default Phil Jackson was wooed by Canada

Quote:
There was a time when Canada Basketball officials went big-name hunting when they were searching for a coach.

A big name like Phil Jackson.

The Los Angeles Lakers coach said last night not only has he turned down offers from USA Basketball to be its national team coach, he also had an offer from north of the border.

"I was asked by the Canadians if I'd like to coach their Olympic team," Jackson said, without divulging exactly when that offer was made. "Steve Nash wasn't a mature enough player yet, so I had to turn that one down."

Suprising that there wasn't enough star players for him to accept the job.

Hahhhh, we then had to settle for Triano and now Rautins!

And the rest, as they say.... is unfortunate history.

You mean since Nash is over the hill, doesn't play for Canada and our national team blows? I'm sure he'd be all over that.

Canada's got the athletes and the talent to compete on a world level, it comes down to coaching from the top-down. Canada just has to work on reforming its coaching at the grass roots level.

Phil coaching the Canadian team would put a huge low down towards his rep.

how do you go from making offers to phil jackson, to making an offer to leo? Its like the Knicks going all out for LBJ and then settling for Mike James

It was just a marketing strategy. There isn't much going on for Canadian basketball as of the moment. So they have to hype it up one way or the other.

Wasn't Triano (through Colangelo connection) a coach for the U.S?
