Default Payton Wants To Join Celtics

Gimme a break .... he sees how sucessful and how almost unstoppable this team is and now he wants to come back for a ring.

The Celtics have been pleased with the play of second-year point guard Rajon Rondo. But there has been a feeling that Boston still needs a veteran backup at the position.

Coach Doc Rivers said the Celtics "would be in trouble" if Rondo got hurt, but he also likes his roster. Rivers said he hasn't talked to anyone in Celtics' management about Payton. Goodwin said that while he has talked to Danny Ainge several times about Payton, the Celtics' basketball boss hasn't shown strong interest. Other available veteran free agent point guards include Earl Boykins and Keith McLeod.

"I like my team, and I would kind of like to play this a little bit longer and see where we go," said Rivers. "Clearly [Wednesday] night, when Rajon was off the floor it changed the game. But we have ways of correcting that. If not, then maybe. But right now we'll just let this team play it out a little bit more."

"We're not panicking. Having said that, we're aware of it; there is no doubt about it. I'm just going to coach the ones now, and we'll worry about the other stuff later."

Come playoff time, the Celtics will be interested in Payton. Sure, he's an opportunist, but would I want him on my bench in the playoffs? Damn right.

I'm telling you man, sure, he's old, but if you needed a guy to play some D in an important game, to provide your young PG with 10 minutes of rest in a game, I'd bring Payton on. If Rondo's not running the point and you're in a tight playoff situation against, let's say the Pistons, who are they going to turn to?

I think it all depends on his conditioning, but I would work him out, clearly define his role and let him suit up.

Payton's finished, he hasnt been able to guard anyone for 3 years now, he's just played on some good defensive teams. If Boston wants a general backup PG they can easily find better than him on the trading block.

No one has even touched on what Payton could do for Rondo's game..i would consider that a win-win for both sides.
