Quote:
Paul Pierce will sign with the Washington Wizards on a two-year deal at the mid-level exception for $10 million. The second season will be a player option.

The Wizards were on the market for a small forward following the departure of Trevor Ariza.

Pierce spent last season with the Brooklyn Nets.

Really surprising, would of never thought.

Woaaah

Eric Koreen ‏@ekoreen 2m

Never forget: Nets gave up three first-rounders and gave Celts right to swap another for Pierce and Garnett. Whoops.

Don't understand this move from Paul's view. No chance for a ring and thought he could've gotten a bit more.

Current Paul Pierce vs. last year's Ariza is still a downgrade for the Wizards. So Raptors still benefit.

Let's not forget, Wall was arguably as good as Lowry last year and is still young. Beal looks like a potential future all star. Nene and Gortat is a massive FC. They made quick work of the Bulls, who many thought to be a huge threat for us.

Don't underestimate the Wizards.

I'm wondering if KG would ever consider the raptors. I don't think there's much waiting for him in Brooklyn with PP gone and a new coach. We know he likes it here. Leadership and intensity are there even if he's past his prime. I'd rather a bigger body and develop something younger but there are intangibles he would bring to the bench.

They're not a 3rd place team in the East; especially with Rose finally coming back. They will, however, be 4th because they're going to win the Southeast. PP signing was quite a surprise, but as Clutch said, he's a clear downgrade from Ariza who was having a career year.

Just out of curiosity, can everyone name their top 8 east teams? I can't really think of 3 teams better than the Wiz right now but I think I'm being forgetful.

Well, you got wildcard elements. I think the East is as open as it's been in a long time. I think Washington is 1 of 6 teams that could conceivably be a top 3 team.

Cleveland? Likely a top 3 seed but where exactly could depend on whether they trade/acquire more vets, or roll with mostly younger players around LBJ.

Indiana? They finished the year with a lot of turmoil and might not have Stephenson back. Who knows? Maybe they slip from first to, like 4th or 5th? Possible.

Chicago? All depends on how healthy Rose will be, and whether or not Gasol fits in well with his new team. They could be a beast, or they could have serious chemistry issues. If all goes well, I think they'll be scary. But they need some things to go right.

Miami? How many games will Wade even play if he comes back? Will Wade have a fire in his belly after Lebron bolted? How will the Heat spend the rest of the cap to fill out their roster. Most decent FAs are gone.

Toronto? Lots of potential for internal improvement. Didn't lose anybody this offseason, and appear to have an even more respectable bench. Likely the favourites to win the Atlantic again.

I'm obviously bias, but for the first time in a long time, I think we're one of the teams who needs the least amount of "luck" and "things going right" in order to be successful. Like any team in any season, we mainly just need to stay friggin' healthy.

Good signing by the Wizards. I had really hoped Pierce would have re-signed with the Nets and played one more year with Garnett before he retires. Then Pierce could have entered free agency once again and played his final 2 season with Doc Rivers in Clipper Land. Who knows, maybe with Pierce now leaving Garnett might just call it a career.

In regards to KoolAid's question of the possibly top 8 teams in the east I would probably with (in no particular order):

Toronto
Cleveland
Chicago
Miami
Washington
Indiana
Atlanta
Charlotte

The Knicks and the Pistons are the only 2 other teams that I could see taking over one of the the top 8 spots.
