Pacers Paul George about to sign 5yrs/90mil extension

All-Star forward Paul George and the Indiana Pacers are finalizing a five-year, $90 million-plus maximum contract extension, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

A deal is expected to be signed this week, league sources told Yahoo.

For the Pacers and George, who was voted the 2013 NBA Most Improved Player, the five-year deal will cement the gifted young forward as Indiana's designated franchise player.

In three NBA seasons, George has developed into one of the league's most thrilling young talents, blossoming into a starring role in the Pacers' march to a Game 7 against the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals last season.

George, who was selected to the All-NBA third team for the 2012-13 season, is part of the 2010 draft class that has until Oct. 31 to agree upon extensions to avoid restricted free agency next summer.

George raised his scoring average to 19.2 points a game in this past postseason, up from 17 per game in the regular season. He has a strong chance to be part of USA Basketball's 2014 team that will compete for the World Cup of Basketball in Spain, and the 2016 Olympic team in Brazil.

The extending of George's deal solidifies a Pacers core that could contend for an NBA title this season and beyond. After pushing the Heat to seven games a season ago, Indiana will return forward Danny Granger from a knee injury, and added a key reserve in a trade, forward Luis Scola, to strengthen what had been a weak bench. Indiana also signed free-agent forward Chris Copeland of the New York Knicks.

Indiana re-signed forward David West to a three-year, $36 million extension in July, and secured center Roy HIbbert with a four-year, $58 million deal last summer.

George recently told the Indianapolis Star he expected an extension to be completed before the start of the season.

I'm sorry, but 18 mill a year for a nicer, more scoring oriented Trevor Ariza sounds ridiculous to me.

Man they overpaid for Paul George. He's a nice player but at this point I think $15 million is the highest they should've went, and even that might be to much.

I'd trade everyone else on this team to pair him with JV

really? He has it all imo. Length, height, defence, passing, rebounding, and is just learning to be more assertive to score. It was his first season being the guy, I think this contract will be worth it. He is already leaps and bounds better than Gay imo.

He's about the same size and length as Gay. They're both very good rebounders, Rudy Gay at the same age averaged 19.6/6/2 on a far better field goal percentage (47%). I even find they look alike.

Paul George had a 53.1 TS% last year. He shot 41.9% from the field
and scored less points-per-shot than DeMar did. He also had 3 TO per game. He's not a max guy, he has potential to be but he has his issues and at 23yrs old it's difficult to say how this will turn out in 3-4yrs.

Is he worth 18-20mil/yr.....no, is Rudy Gay worth 18-20mil.....no.

jeff never said Rudy>George. he just dropped stats to prove that Rudy was better statistically at the SAME AGE...

so jeff is right on the ball with his point.

but in terms of ceiling...i feel george might get to greater heights.

I did indeed watch the playoffs. I like George and would take him here no problem, but no way is he a max guy. Not saying Gay is......but neither is. Rudy Gay at the same age was looked at the same way. Too early to say he's going to be "leaps and bounds" ahead of Gay imo. People fall in and out of love with players so quickly. If he shits the bed next playoffs people will be laughing at this deal. But it's almost expected.

Mehhh, point is young players that have a good couple seasons get payed and more often then not don't live up to that deal and eventually are looked at as over payed and/or over rated. I expect the same will happen in this instance at least to a degree.

Oh I know, won't happen here......he's a star and will dominate for years. Btw, did you watch him in the playoffs? lol

yes I watched him go toe to toe with LeBron James and take the bench-less Pacers to 7 games against the Heat in the ECF.

You point out his inefficiencies, when you don't acknowledge that he did what he did at the age of 23 and stepped up to take the team off Granger's shoulders. It was unprecedented, and he stepped up big time in the playoffs.

In the playoffs, he did even better than in the regular season. I don't see any of our turd wings do anything but score inefficiently.

George needs to develop a mid range game to really get to the next level.
