Lakers Pau Gasol: Best Player in the NBA Today?

Quote:
We know that LeBron James(notes), when firing on all cylinders, is the best player in basketball.

We know that Kobe Bryant(notes) is the cruelest, the most devastating when he has to be, that Chris Paul(notes) can affect the game differently than any small man, and that Dwight Howard(notes) can absolutely dominate a game even while going full quarters at a time without a field goal.

But has Pau Gasol(notes) been the best player in the NBA during its first month? I'm OK with saying yes to that.
More here: Is Pau Gasol the best player in the NBA right now? - Ball Don't Lie - NBA - Yahoo! Sports

Thoughts?

No. Put him on a team without Kobe and PJ and ask that question and its a resounding no. Did he have a great month? Yeah. Did he play the best out of anyone in the league? Maybe. Best player in NBA right now? Fuck no.

Hes becoming one of the most overrated players in the NBA with the way people talk about him now. People have forgotten what he did in Memphis too quickly as the number one guy.

best all around big man. still a little soft every now and then. during the lakers first loss to the nuggets, nene abused him on both ends. then again, even stars have off nights.

the mamba is still the man, thus pau isn't even the best on his team. hehe. and then lebron. and then durant and pau.

You seriously think Pau is the 4th best player in the league right now? Wow.

Yeah Pau wasn't exactly setting the league on fire when he was in Memphis. Sure, he was an above average player, but also on a bad team. Now that he's getting the appropriate media coverage, he gets to showcase his overall talent. But as thrills said, put him on a team without Kobe, and things would be a lot harder.

Best Big man maybe, best player no way. He had a good month no doubt but I think many other players are playing better then him (ie. D Rose).

Kobe is more talented, but he play selfish, chucking (or how it calls?) all the time. I was bet on the Lakers last season and was a ''fan'' of them. But i hated Kobe so much! Come on, many times he's just a negative thing to his team. I wished Lakers was trade him for Eddy Curry or something... And ONLY in the finals, Kobe started to play as a team player.
Yes, Bryant's talent is so amazing, his game is so beautiful to watch. All his moves, signature fadeaways... He is highlight player, but basketball is a team sport and Kobe is the guy I don't want to see on my team. Pau is, Pau is real deal.
To be a Lakers fan and a Kobe fan is like to say - I hate 2 things - niggers and racism...
I don't know, as a little Lakers fan I hate Kobe, as a passive guy, I don't mind about him.

I think you guys are confusing your versions of the past. While I do not necessarily agree that Pau is even a Top 10 player in this league, it also not true that he failed to make his team better. 45,49, and 50 win seasons in three consecutive years isn't bad... they were pretty good for a while there.

ok I just read a few more posts on here.

You guys are all slaves to the media hype.

Rarely do guys respect players for the right reasons.

Pau was a stud for Memphis, and learned the NBA game there.

He's a grown man now and he does so many things on the court to help his team it isn't funny.

Like most kids though, if it in't a 3 pointer or a dunk, it just aint shit.

Sad that you guys can't enjoy a game, or a great layer properly due to a lack of true basketball IQ.

Sure, currently. While guys like CP3 and Deron Williams are sexier commodities, the best big man in the league deserves a top 5 spot because said big man is imperative to any championship success.

There is no such thing as the "best" player.

+1

His time as a Laker has helped him improve into the player he is today.

Better and smarter than before.

#1 guy? Maybe...Probably not.

But he's sure as hell taking advantage of his situation and for that I commend him.

Pau's like a magician in the post. So confident and so easy for him down there.

He's like the best 2nd option anyone would have on a team(yes better 2nd option(s) than the Heat have at the moment). He's ok not being the leader, can be a team player, yet can still share the spotlight with Kobe.

He's one of the most complete players in the league, the defination of what a power forward should be, but its absurd to say hes the best player in the league. Best PF, sure, but not the best player.

I still don't think any PF can take over a game like Dirk in today's NBA.

He has that in his back pocket whenever he needs it.

The league allowed a heavily unbalanced trade, when the Lakers traded their worst player, Kwame Brown, straight across for international All-Stud Pau Gasol. That's worse then the Blazers trading Oberto and his bad ticker straight across for Tim Duncan halfway through the season!?!
NBA loves their Lakers, because the NBA cares, and it's where amazing happens
