Orlando to sign Pietrus

The Orlando Magic have reached a verbal agreement with shooting guard Mickael Pietrus and expect to sign him to a multi-year contract today, general manager Otis Smith confirmed to FLORIDA TODAY.

Pietrus, a 6-foot-6, 200-pound shooting guard, is expected to earn almost all of the Mid-Level Exception, starting at 5.2 million next season. Pietrus, a native of Les Abymes, Guadeloupe, France, played all five of his NBA seasons with the Golden State Warriors.

The signing of Pietrus ends the Magicís chase of free-agent shooting guard Corey Maggette and could end their chances of retaining combo guard Keyon Dooling.

Pietrus is especially appealing to the Magic because of his ability to defend. He is a strong defender with a long wingspan, traits that appealed to Smith. Smith, who used to work with the Golden State Warriors, is quite familiar with Pietrusí toughness and defensive grit.

Smith said the Magic needed to upgrade their shooting guard position in order to make a dramatic improvement next season. He is expected to be the opening day starter at shooting guard.

``In the Eastern Conference you had better be able to defend that position. We think he can really help us do that. And he can shoot the 3.íí

The signing also means that last seasonís starting shooting guard, Maurice Evans, likely wonít return.

dam i kinda liked him. the worst part is that its going to another eastern confrence rival that we will be fighting for a third spot in the play offs with (behind Boston and detroit)

Guess this means Maggette is either going with Spurs or Celtics. I like Pietrus, but I don't think he's worth the full MLE though. Maggette would've been great, but now that Orlando's weakest position is fixed it seems like a good move for them.

That would be a pretty big line-up eh?
Pg Jameer Nelson
Sg Pietrus
SF Hedo Turkoglu
PF Rashard Lewis
C Dwight Howard

I think with acquring Pietrus, they may lose some of their 3-point scoring from last year.

Well not a lot. They still have Hedo and Lewis for that.

i think it will not benefit the magic a lot considering they practically wasted their MLE on pietrus not having much money to sign other players

I like this signing

It's not like the Magic were going to make any major moves. They pretty much locked themselves into their current situation by giving all of that money to Lewis last year.

He's a nice complimentary piece. They aren't particularly deep at the swing spot, and Pietrus will fill a lot of minutes while they bring Courtney Lee along.

This makes Orlando a better team, without question.

they are going to be clogged at the Sg-Sf position with a lot of the players playing there. IMO they should've gone with a center to back up Dwight Howard with Tony Battie's injury problems

Clogged? There are 3 players for the SG and 3 for the SF with Pietrus. Besides with Pietrus here Orlando will probably trade JJ or Bogans....or even both. And thats makes the SG and SF position even more open.
