Orlando Magic hire Jacque Vaughn as their new head coach

Vaughn will take over a team that is expected to trade superstar Dwight Howard, go into rebuilding mode and begin to emphasize developing young players.

Vaughn, 37, is widely viewed within NBA circles as bright, hard-working and organized.

But, at the same time, some league insiders have noted that he brings limited coaching experience.

After retiring as a player in 2009, Vaughn was hired in 2010 by the Spurs as an assistant coach, working under Gregg Popovich.

Magic general manager Rob Hennigan also conducted first-round interviews with Philadelphia 76ers associate head coach Michael Curry, Utah Jazz assistant coach Jeff Hornacek, Golden State Warriors lead assistant coach Michael Malone, Phoenix Suns player development coach Lindsey Hunter and Indiana Pacers associate head coach Brian Shaw.

Hennigan and Vaughn already knew each other. Hennigan was working in San Antonio’s basketball-operations department when the Spurs signed Vaughn as a free agent in July 2006.

Within league circles and among many Magic fans, Shaw and Malone initially were considered the front-runners for the job. But Shaw either took himself out of the running or was told he was no longer being considered, and Malone didn’t advance into the second round.

That development caught many by surprise, including former NBA superstar Shaquille O’Neal, who was a teammate of Shaw’s and played one season for the Cleveland Cavaliers when Malone was a Cavaliers assistant coach.

On Twitter, O’Neal wrote: “Orlando magic is about to hire jock Vaugh over mike Malone or Brian shaw are u kidding me, wow, good luck winning wit Dat team Dwite howard.”

In the past, the Magic have hired a head coach with less coaching experience than Vaughn.

In 1999, the team selected Doc Rivers even though Rivers had never coached beyond his son’s youth-league team.

Rivers’ selection turned out to be an inspired choice. He was named the 1999-00 NBA Coach of the Year after he led a rebuilding team to a 41-41 record. Rivers now is widely regarded as one of the NBA’s top coaches.

how is brian shaw suppose to be a good coach because he coached under phil jackson,

have some respect shaq first day on the job, its one of the most difficult jobs in hte league right now, its going to be a full rebuild, its hard to question any management from okc right now

shaq is one of the biggest haters around, he dogged dwight howard for years just becuase he couldn't handle the fact that dwight is the best center in the game and he took his superman tag which shaq think he came up with like he is the first athlete to do that

dogged kobe to, seems like kobe gets along well with every teammate accept for shaq and karl malone, well both those guys in ended up as some of the biggest douches

i love watching barkley destroy shaq on t.v its entertaining and makes you respect barkley even more
