Asik would be a great get here, but would also reek of a lack of a plan. This team isn't good enough, adding Asik just makes us slightly better. Although, he's a better trade chip if we could get him for Landry or Amir.

JV's game is very different to Dwight's.

It's just one of many cases where the actual salary that a player gets that year isn't the same as his official salary number that's used for trades and for calculating cap space.

In Asik's case, his contract falls under what's called the Arenas rule. The team owner pays 5 mil the first two years and 15 mil the third year, but his cap/trade number is 8.3 mil every year. Similarly with Jeremy Lin.

Another special rule, for example, is veteran minimum. Kenyon Martin gets ~1.5 mil this year (part of it is from the Knicks, part from the NBA), but his cap figure is only 900k.
Or, amnesty rule. Scola gets ~10 mil this year in actual salary, but his cap number is only 4.5 mil.
Or, signing bonus. Roy Hibbert received an advance bonus when he signed his contract but it's not reflected in his cap number. His cap number this year is 14.3 mil but he's actually paid less because he received part of that as an advance.

A lot of these exceptions and a lot of players who get different salary than their official cap number.

So then you have some websites (like your link) that show the actual money received, but it's not very relevant for us fans. For us, cap number is more important because that's what is used for trades. For cap numbers, you could check this site for example:
NBA Salaries | HOOPSWORLD | Basketball News & NBA Rumors

-edit: actually, your site also has cap numbers. They are listed to the right of the actual salary.

I think trading for Asik would be very Colangelo-esque move. Quick fix for some of our problems while limiting us drastically in the future and leaving us on the treadmill

The Houston Rockets are engaged in trade talks with multiple teams on Omer Asik, but the asking price of Daryl Morey has been far too high for a deal to get completed.

Asik's agent has been in regular contact with Morey about facilitating a trade.

The Rockets are seeking an impact frontcourt player that can help them in the short-term, or a largely unprotected first-round pick in the 2014 NBA Draft.

A deal involving Asik is unlikely to be consummated before December 15 when players signed in the offseason become eligible for trades.

The Rockets are interested in trading Asik to the New Orleans Pelicans for Ryan Anderson. Anderson previously played with Dwight Howard during their time together with the Orlando Magic.

Asik has two seasons and $20 million remaining on his contract.
