Well, there goes a big name off the market (trade and free agent)

CHARLOTTE The Charlotte Bobcats are paying big money to keep top rebounder and shot blocker Emeka Okafor.

The Bobcats have come to terms with the restricted free agent on a six-year, $72 million deal, ending a month of negotiations.

General manager Rod Higgins confirmed the deal Tuesday, which marks the biggest contract the Bobcats have given a player since they entered the league in the 2004-05 season.

ESPN.com first reported late Monday that the two sides were close to an agreement.

Okafor was the second overall pick in 2004 and Charlotte's first draft pick. He turned down Charlotte's offer of $12 million a year last year, but settled on the same figure a year later.

Okafor averaged 13.7 points and 10.7 rebounds a game last season.

Hmm. I like his numbers but for a #2 pick I think they expected him to be around like a 18/11 guy..
Behind D12, injury prone, under achiever?
72M-6years?

Signings like this have to make people to stop and think a bit as to how easy they think it will be to acquire players. It is an exception to get a big man like Emeka by a S&T. Who was the last one acquired in a S&T, Shaq? And that was because of Kobe, right?

5/55 was where I thought was fair for him. But good signing anyway.

you do realize that 72 over six is just a million more a season, right?

no one expected 18 ppg from okafor. it was well documented that he very limited offensive skills coming out of college. i like him, though. he's a little undersized for his position, but he's certainly in the better quarter of the league there. given the choice, i would prefer to have him over both o'neal and bargs.

Yes I do realize that and there is a difference.

And you're right, no one's expecting him to drop 18/game...so what's your point?

his ppg isn't any reason to question whether he is under-achieving or living up to expectations/potential. that's my point. anything else?

I think Biedrins is better and he's healthier anyways, but then again I think Biedrins got underpaid.
