Grizzlies OJ Mayo wants to play the PG position

Quote:
Perhaps the biggest question is whether the Grizzlies are willing to or can re-sign restricted free agent O.J. Mayo, who has been considered their best outside threat the past two seasons. But Mayo struggled to adjust to the sixth man role. He also shot just 27 percent in the series against the Clippers.

Mayo stated he wants to play point guard going forward, and he'll certainly be looking for a deal that pays more than the $5.6 million he earned this season. Despite obvious limitations on the ball and inconsistent shooting, what Mayo might command could be too steep for the Grizzlies.

"It just keeps getting better and better," Mayo said, campaigning to stay in a Grizzlies uniform. "Why not stick around and finish it out and see where we can get?"
Questions remain after Grizzlies' season ends The Commercial Appeal

I always looked at him as a point guard, like a Gary Payton...I think he'll be better suited there,in this case Raptors need to bring him in asap to play with his fellow usc alumnite Derozan

As long as its not in Toronto at either position... good for him.

Is it the sub-par ball handling or the inability to run a team that really does it for you?

The ball handling could be improved and he hasn't had an honest opportunity to run a team! As long as he has court vision and the ability to create,it could work and majority a those two attributes are based on team chemistry.

Sometimes a player just knows their the game better than any coach

J.Terry started out as a PG but now has made the transition to a solid Shooting Guard, Jamal Jamal Crawford samething. Heck, even Ron Harper played Point Guard for the Bulls.

I have 0 faith he can play the point. I've yet to hear anyone make a convincing argument that he can. He's a decent outside shooter and a decent defender when engaged. I don't think that's going to convince anyone to let him play the point.

Mayo's ballhandling isn't as good as any of those that you mentioned.. not even Harper's, who really didn't play much PG as a Bull anyway.

I can see him handling it a here and there like James harden, but he'd get run off the floor by the good starting point guards.

Leandro Barbosa isn't a good ballhandler either, but he's done a great job starting or coming off the bench as a point guard in the past, in relief of Steve Nash or Jose Calderon when they've been injured, for the Raptors and Suns respectively.

If a coaching staff shows patience and provides a vow of confidence combined with Mayo being committed to playing the position,it could easily work.

*Note: In Memphis case,I wouldn't recommend it considering they already have Conley Jr starting but I think can work on other teams, the Raptors being one.

in the whole history of the game, every single undersized shooting guard or scoring-first point guard has claimed at one point or another that they want to play like a true PG. I really don't understand their fascination with playing a position you're not really made for ...

and yeah, just for the record, there has never been a recorded case where that actually happened in reality.

I don't think these examples strengthen your case ...
Show us examples of players going the other way, from shooting oriented guards to successful PG careers ...

wow, he is a playmaker but not a pg, i wanted this guy in a raptor uniform but now realize this guy could be an issue in the future if things don't go well,

cant wait to see what happens with this team when the playoffs are over and the next season start on draft day
