Exclamation OFFICIAL: Shaq to the Suns for Marion (update Pg. 3)

How does this make sense for either team?

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3232862

The Miami Heat's season has come to this: Shaquille O'Neal may be on the trading block.

Citing two sources close to the situation, the Miami Herald reported on Tuesday that the team has told the center that he should be prepared for a possible deal.

The Herald goes on to report that a trade of O'Neal to the Phoenix Suns for Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks has been discussed. One of O'Neal's representatives told the newspaper that they were informed that talks with Phoenix were ongoing and serious.

ESPN.com's Marc Stein reports that this scenario has been rumored for a week, but it will not work without major modifications due to financial restraints.

The Heat have a league-worst 9-37 record and have lost four straight. O'Neal has missed the last six games with a sore left hip. Heat coach Pat Riley said on Tuesday that O'Neal will undergo an MRI.

''We just want to back it up and see, after two weeks, what it shows,'' Riley said, according to the Herald.

O'Neal led the Heat to the 2005-06 championship, but he is averaging a career-low 14.8 points per game, while adding 7.8 rebounds in 32 games this season.

Trading O'Neal would open considerable salary cap room for Miami, which is due to pay the 35-year-old $20 million in each of the next two seasons.

Don't know how well the current version of Shaq fits into their up-tempo style, but they won't be soft in the middle anymore.

WOW .... ACIE's right. I don't think his current shape would help him in Phoenix in the slightest, but it would be a great deal for Miami though. Anything would be better in Miami right now considering how horrible they are.

phoenix would go from a western conf contender to a first round exit if they did this.
o'neal is fat, slow, and injured half the time.... it totally goes against their run n' gun style.
wow, now i understand why marion is pissed with the management, he gets no respect.

Mavs could be good fit for him... and Cuban might be willing to eat his contract...

I dunno, with a PG like Nash on the team who can play both an uptempo and a half court game I don't see this as a bad deal, espescially in the playoffs where uptempo never really works.

Plus, Phoenix needs to make a move to win now and this is a good "win now" move. Also, you get a chance to move Diaw to the three who'll probably put up better numbers than Marion.

Good deal for Phoenix if they're looking for a 2 year window to win. Plus, if history has shown us anything, when Shaq joins a new team, he's usually a beast for a year or two. It's when he gets comfortable when he becomes lazy.

Well, Phoenix has to make a move forsure considering how the Lakers have now stepped it up on teams in the West. I also think that if the Mavs want to be taken serious, they too need to make a move soon too.

It makes perfect sense to me.

Shaq has been off for what now? a month? If he can gear himself up for another 5-6 months of play, he can get another ring and retire. I don't think the Suns would miss Marion that much. It means more shots for Amare, Barbosa, Bell, Diaw, and now Shaq. With Shaq and Amare down low, who's gonna stop them? This would certainly make them favourites in the West and moves Stoudamire to his normal 4 position. And if indeed Shaq gets a ring, he could retire on top and twofold, wiping his contract off the books/cap. If Marion gets dealt to Miami, you know he'll opt out of that contract at the end the season, cause he wants to play for a winner = instant cap space for the Heat (in fact, it wouldn't suprise me if Miami turned around and dealt Marion to someone else at the trade deadline). All they would have to absorb is that nasty contract Marcus Banks got.

You can now move Amare to the 4, which is way better for defensive purposes.

How good does Nash make Shaq??

Problem I see....now we get to see the hack a shaq all over again.

I dont' get this either. Shaq can't run with the suns.. unless he's willing to remain in the defensive end and throw outlet passes he's going to slow them down.

Do you people watch the playoffs? The Suns hardly run come playoff time. They, like most everyone else, are a halfcourt pick and roll team(and a team that picks apart matchups in the post) and a very good one at that. This isnt a point of whether Shaq can run up and down fast or not, its a point of whether hes motivated(he said he wants to complete his legacy, and the only way how is to win the 5th title) and can still move well enough on D, which he has shown he can do this season and last. I cant see how he wont be motivated going for his 5th title, and having to go through Kobe to do so. Hes gonna get a ton of easy dunks from Diaw and Nash, but hes gotta get it done on D.

As long as he can stay in the game for 25-30 mins, Amare can play PF and wont have to get brutalized by the Boozers, Duncans', West's, and Jeffersons of the West.

If my memory serves me correctly the Suns still look to push the tempo in the playoffs and they don't tighten up the defense come playoff time like other teams do.

Totally agree. This is a playoff move for halfcourt basketball. The suns have had no trouble winning in the reg season, but they get killed in the playoffs becasue they can't play big, gritty and in the half court. Shaq is the biggest, grittiest half-court playoff player there is. If he can get motivated, this team will dominate in the second season.

Good point thriller, but did anyone think that slowing things down come playoff time is doing more harm than good if your the Suns. So do what works best for you during the regular season and if that means continuing to play an up-tempo game then sobeit.

you just have to slow it down. every posession is priceless, and the detroits of the world sure aren't going to let you run against them.

i think this is more of a knee-jerk-reaction-type move by the suns.
LA picks up Pau... when bynum is back, their front court will be nasty...
after Dallas was disssed by wallace for having no big men, dallas knows they have better get someone big - fast!
phoenix is pulling this move to deny dallas of landing shaq, and doing it to match up with LA and SAS....
so maybe it isnt as bad as i first thought..

and marion is crap, IMO.
watch him nosedive on miami.
