Official: Iverson Signs with Philly

Quote:
Retired Allen Iverson Returns to Philadelphia 76ers? It certainly appears as though Allen Iverson will likely finish his NBA career in the place that made him a household name after all. According to various reports, the retired NBA superstar is on the brink of coming out of “retirement” and rejoining his former team the Philadelphia 76ers in a matter of days.

On Friday, a series of team sources confirmed that both sides had been in contact, discussing a possible A.I. return. Other reports indicate that coach Eddie Jordan agreed with the move, and that it would cost the Sixers “possibly less than $2 million,” to bring “The Answer” back to Philly.

Give them Calderon and Bargnani and we got ourselves a team.

Two sources close to the situation told ESPN.com that the Sixers are indeed targeting Monday's home game against the Denver Nuggets -- another of Iverson's former teams -- if they go forward with what appears to be a growing intent to bring back their controversial franchise icon.

just watch how good AI plays in philly then watch raptor fans go crazy for not signing him. Hes just 2 years apart from the old AI and he can still ball better than jose.

'Should be interesting to see if he does do well for himself there for a couple months. I hope Philly has stressed to him that Lou will be starting when he gets back. I wonder how Iverson will respond then?

Allen Iverson is rejoining the Philadelphia 76ers.

Sixers president Ed Stefanski announced the signing Wednesday on the team's Web site. Iverson is expected to make his debut Monday at home against the Denver Nuggets.

"In light of the recent injury to Lou Williams, which will sideline him for close to eight weeks, we felt that Allen was the best available free agent guard to help us at this time," Stefanski said in a release.

Williams, who averaged 17.4 points and 5.1 assists, broke his jaw in Philadelphia's loss to Washington on Nov. 24.

Iverson, his agent and business manager met with Stefanski, coach Eddie Jordan and two other members of the organization Monday.

The 34-year-old Iverson announced his retirement last week after an ill-fated stint with the Memphis Grizzlies. The 10-time All-Star was NBA MVP in 2001 when he led the Sixers to the NBA finals.

Iverson was offered a one-year, non-guaranteed contract on Tuesday, according to a person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the contract talks had not been made public.

The Sixers would owe just under $650,000 if they guarantee his contract for the remainder of the season on Jan. 10. Stefanski plans to talk about Iverson's return in a noon teleconference.

We were all saying the same thing about Jermaine O'Neal last year.

Look, AI is a half-decent player. Is he the same player before his last days in Philly? No. That's the reason why teams wouldn't touch the guy with a 10-foot pole. But if he plays within a team system and puts the team before him, he should be a decent addition. However, by no means is the guy an all-star or capable of playing like his all-star days on a consistent basis.
Should he be a disruption in the clubhouse, Stefanski won't think twice about throwing him out on his ass.

A 40 year old Iverson will still be able to play defence better than Calderon. And I'm not joking or being sarcastic.

This helps them get over the loss of Louis Williams, no doubt. When Lou comes back things may get interesting though.

Iverson is a future Hall of Famer. He's an amazing player. He might be high maintenance and a bit of a problem. But IMO, positives outweigh the negatives by a huge margin.

The thing is, trough out his career, he's made a kind of mistakes that get a lot of attention. The whole practice "fiasco" is the best example of that.

But the amount of fire he brings to the court. The amount of energy. How he played trough so many injuries. The guy is a legend.

However, fans and media(another type of fans who are just listened to compared to regular fans) just love to stick to the negatives and love to think they know shit. (myself included)

I think Allen Iverson would LIFT the Toronto Raptors to the contending level. I think the attitude and the flare he brings to a team is just what the Raptors need. The current players would have to make a sacrifice. The egos would have to be toned down. The shot numbers would have to go down. But I guarantee, Iverson would bring FUCK YOU MENTALITY to this team that would MAKE IT or BRAKE IT. Both of which is better then the current state of slowly dying heartless crap.

I'm really hoping it works out for both, the 76ers and AI. I'd love to see it happen. A true comeback story and a proper ending to a career of an amazing player.

it will be very interesting to see how he does. i hope hes had a revelation that if he has a big end to his career, back in the town he was best in, that he will be cemented as a legend forever.

It was a financial move by Detroit last year, Dumars gave up on that team well before he picked up AI.

They had no intention of winning anything. AI was just a convenient scapegoat.
