So to recap: Lakers take Odom out of three-team CP3 deal and deal him to Mavs into new DAL trade exception created in Tyson Chandler deal

Just came across this and was going to post it but you beat me to it. I'll let it go this time ... ;)

so if i understand this correctly, he was dealt to dallas for strictly the tpe? is that even possible? so LAL basically gave Odom, one of the best six men in the league (arguable the best and good enough to be a starter on 23+ other teams) for nothing to dallas?

'trane 12-11-2011 12:14 AM

tpe's can only be used for single player transactions. they can't be combined with anyone (although can use picks) and they can only be used to acquire one player.

Not for nothing, I'd expect its for reducing their cap to help facilitate getting Chris. Odom was going to go anyways, doesn't it matter how if at the end it nets Chris like the first deal did? Just how you look at it.

DocHoliday99 12-11-2011 12:16 AM

Great for Dallas. Odom will play with a massive chip if the 2 meet in the playoffs again.

jeffb 12-11-2011 12:17 AM

Man, the Lakers get trades done all the time like this where they come out smelling like a rose. Remember the Gasol fleecing.

Now they'll trade Gasol, picks and end up with Paul then get Howard.

TORaptor4Ever 12-11-2011 12:18 AM

Wow. Not bad for DAL. That should cover the loss of Butler.

With Odom gone though I'm very curious to know how in hell LA plans to get CP3 AND Howard. Sorry... but Bynum & Pau just don't cut it.

It's the Lakers, it'll happen.

Jeremy 12-11-2011 12:19 AM

If the Lakers manage to get CP3 & Superman, along with Kobe, that's the best threesome in the NBA to me. It would be very hard for any team to match that.

DocHoliday99 12-11-2011 12:20 AM

The Lakers have pulled out of three-team trade talks that would have netted them Chris Paul.

The NBA rejected an agreed upon trade on Thursday between the Lakers, Hornets and Rockets. The Lakers agreed to acquire Paul in exchange for Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom. Houston would acquire for Gasol while sending Kevin Martin, Luis Scola, Goran Dragic and a first round pick. The Hornets would receive Odom, along with Martin, Scola, Dragic and the first round pick.

Sources say the Lakers will instead trade Odom to the Mavericks for their traded player exception that was acquired from the Knicks for Tyson Chandler.

The Lakers were unable to meet the demands set by the NBA and will not pursue a direct trade with the Hornets, according to a source that spoke with Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports

Lakers must think they have an inside track to land D12 now.... otherwise I don't get the Odom deal.

Bill Haverchuck 12-11-2011 12:24 AM

Well, ya had to figure Dallas would do something. If a team was ever going to use a sizeable TPE, this was the time. Once Cuban didn't re-sign Chandler or Caron, it seemed like he would make a move to bring in a new body. /captain obvious/

@KevinDing
The logic -- which is my own, as of now -- is that trade exception paves way for Lakers to take on Turkoglu's contract from Orlando.

I was just thinking about Turkeys contract...replaces Odom somewhat and alleviates Orlando

Yes, sir. That's makes sense.

Blaze 12-11-2011 12:36 AM

Forgot where I read it but, apparently, they backed out of Paul talks and just want Howard right now.

If this is true we kind of indirectly made LA's life more difficult than it had to be. GO RAPTORS!
