Since being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 draft, Oden has played in 82 games, the equivalent of one NBA season. Oden has career averages of 9.4 points and 7.3 rebounds.

He should just retire already.

Why retire when you can get paid for getting hurt?

forgetting Bill Walton... but at least he got a title for them

I'm like one of the few optimistic Blazer fans. It's been a cascading waterfall of shit talk over here. These knee surgeries are pretty routine, and they're not the microfracture witchdoctor spell which caused Oden to miss entire seasons. Regardless, it was doubtful he was going to see the floor this year anyway after a "setback" in preseason.

When healthy, Oden is a force. He's trying hard to get back there, and I don't see this as an opportunity to say "hit the road jack". The Blazers have spent a long time trying to get Greg going, and if it ever does, the Blazers will cause teams all kinds of problems in the painted area.

Wish he could stay healthy.

Superjudge 02-05-2012 01:29 AM

Poor kid, I really hope he gets better.

and Sabonis. Which is an even sadder case. Because if he was allowed to be a Blazer right after the draft, he might have avoided all those chronic injuries and reached his potential.
Soviet coaches forced him to play through injuries on many occasions, and rushed him back after surgery to play in the Olympics.

yes. although Yao was never actually rushed against doctors' wishes, as far as i know.
i may be wrong.
it was more a case of his body not being able to sustain the NBA schedule + international schedule. i don't remember him actually playing for China while hurt. Rather, he would come back from China and get hurt in the NBA and spend a season recovering. And then back to China when healthy.

on the other hand, Sabonis actually went to Portland to get a knee surgery and was taken out of rehab by the Soviets to play in the Olympics amid doctors' (both Portland's and Lithuania's) objections.
He literally had a limp to his step during that tournament, and he went on to have issues with that leg throughout his career.
It's not like his body was unfit to handle games, he had quite a few long regular+playoff seasons even into his 30s. While playing for Lithuania during summers. So that seems different to Yao's situation. But when the Soviets tell you to go and be a Willis Reed, you go and be Willis Reed, even for entire Olympics, even if it kills your athleticism for good.
