Mavericks Nowitzki: "I'm too old for a rebuild"

Quote:
Dirk Nowitzki has two seasons remaining on his contract and also a no-trade clause. But with the Mavericks unable to land Deron Williams after not re-signing Tyson Chandler, the question is whether Nowitzki has enough time remaining to endure a rebuild.

"Iím not sure," Nowitzki said when asked the question in May. "Iíve always said I want to finish my career here and obviously the championship season topped it all off; thatís what I always was chasing and dreaming about so that kind of sealed that deal on that front. If we really come out with nobody this summer then maybe they want to rebuild and, obviously, Iím too old for that. Weíll just have to wait and see what happens on that front. But I still think I got two, three good years left in me and if we get some players in here we can be right back up there and compete."

Do you think that Dirk will retire in two more years? I mean he doesn't have a squad like Duncan where he can play a back role whenever he feels like it.

Give Duncan Vet Minimum. Then Neal, Splitter, and Leonard for Dirk.

Parker
Ginobili
Jackson
Nowitzki
Duncan

That team would've been a dynasty in 2006.

Dirk, KG and TD could all play until they're 40 and still be very effective. I think his retirement would be based on how good the Mavs are. If theyre a middle of the road team I think he'll retire earlier than expected.

This is really the first time in like 13 years that the Mavericks look like a lotto team. Theyve got a long road ahead of them.

Man.... kind of reminds me what happened to the Pistons... great team for a while, won a title and then everything falls apart shortly afterwards.

At least Dirk got his ring.

he sees his good friend steve-o going to a legitimate contender, and his team slowly falling apart and hes getting a wee bit jealous.

I knew it was a big mistake when they let Chandler walk. There's a huge risk when you try to wait for players to come here. They should have signed Chandler and traded him down the road if they wanted to free up cap for Deron Williams or Howard. I think they would have made a good run if Chandler was still with the team.
