Now out of Carmelo sweepstakes, Nets begin to move forward

NEWARK -- Mikhail Prokhorov came to America and pulled the plug.

He arrived from Moscow this afternoon to celebrate "An Evening of Russian Culture," but before he did that, he may have affected the landscape of the NBA. The Carmelo Anthony sweepstakes, at least from the Nets' perspective, are over.

"Really, I am not happy with the way how this deal has gone until now," Prokhorov said at a news conference before the Nets played the Utah Jazz. "It has taken too long. It has been played out in public. And I'm certain it has taken a toll on the players. And I believe it has cost us several games.

"So I think the management of the team did a great job. But there comes a time when the price is simply too expensive. I'm instructing our team to walk away from the deal. And the meeting that was supposed to be held with our management tomorrow in Denver with Carmelo is hereby cancelled."

"The price to pull off a trade for Carmelo Anthony proved 'too expensive' for Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov."

lol Melo is a Nugget for life.

Good for them. Rolling with the Humpchise is the right move.

Or he might have to take a slight pay cut, similar to the big three of the Heat. This summer, he can still sign with the Knicks. But they would have to give up on Wilson Chandler, since he is a RFA and could command a hefty raise too. Now that the Knicks have more leverage, I wouldn't be surprised if Denver works out a S&T with the Knicks. But I doubt the package will be as nice as what the Nets were offering. Denver might soon regret the way they handled this situation, assuming they are responsible for all the leaks. Who knows? Maybe Melo's agent got wind of the details and sabotoged things.

If Melo went to the Knicks, they'd also need to find a new home for Gallo since having him as a backup to Carmelo would be a waste of talent. Felton and Gallo for CP3... :mischief:

Well, Gallo might be involved in the S&T for Melo. That way the Knicks could keep Chandler with birds rights. Wilson can - and has been - playing some PF for the Knicks when Amare is at Center.

Melo's trying to orchestrate his move to the Knicks.

I agree with this sentiment:

"I am not ready to overpay," Prokhorov said. "As soon as you make a mistake, you can wait for the next chance for the next five or six years. That's why I prefer to be really patient."

If Carmelo is a restricted free agent that means nuggets can match any offer, but does that mean the player still can go to whichever team he wants or he has to stay with his current team? And if he has to stay why can't they just hold on to his contract instead of doing a sign and trade and trade him to a team he doesnt want to go to?

He has an ETO and if he opts for early termination he becomes an unrestricted FA.

O ok thanks

Chiggmo 01-20-2011 01:27 AM

All this talk of chandler being and RFA makes me want him signed in the offseason, anyone agree? Thats if he'd play here of course.

komot 01-21-2011 01:11 AM

all this talk was just to allow carmelo to play normally. i believe the nets are still the #1 contender with all the assets they have to give denver and the ability to provide him with a large contract. maybe knicks since they now have 2 1st rounders + gallo + fillers.
