Default New playoff seeding next year, good or bad?

The most newsworthy item for the East all season didn't even come out of the East. When NBA commissioner David Stern was at Staples Center last month, he opened the door to changing the league's postseason format by taking down the geographic boundaries that dictate the NBA Finals being East vs. West. This is an issue that Stern has previously swatted away with a waggling finger a la Dikembe Mutombo, who plays in the West for Houston.

Now, though, Stern is backing down. He still said the league doesn't want to change its regular-season format because of the current unbalanced schedule and the regular-season rivalries. But he brought up the notion of seeding the teams 1-16 regardless of conference affiliation, once they qualify which would make for a fresh and exciting approach to the postseason. It would be a real tournament format and even sweeter than the NCAA's 16.

"It's fair to say there's been enough discussion about this that we're going to study it with the competition committee," said Stern, who even suggested a change could be official via owner vote in October.

And the real payoff comes at the end, no doubt. No more bogus "championship" series. Last season would have seen the Spurs up against a legitimate threat such as Phoenix, Dallas or even Utah instead of outclassing the East-winning Cavaliers so easily.

Look back at the Lakers' three consecutive championships in 2000-02, and what pops out of the mental scrapbook? The comeback against Portland, the gut-checks from San Antonio, and the epic struggle with Sacramento. Indiana, Philadelphia and New jersey in noncompetitive NBA Finals are mere afterthoughts.

It does look like it has its positives. The top 2 teams being in the finals and not conference or even semi finals now, and many very good matchups come 2nd round on. Problem is the 1st round wouldnt be as good as it will be this year with just the west and the 4/5 and 3/6 games in the east, so maybe then making the 1st rd best of 5 as well could be a solution?

I've been saying this for about 2 years now. But if you're gonna do this I think the scheduling then should change. Based on current scheduling, the scheduling favours the conferences (i.e. East v. East 4, East v. West 2) and has playoff implications. If you change from 1-16 then you have to change the schedule format so that regular season games have playoff implication. It would make no sense to be the 17th team, be an Eastern team and only play the 16th team (a West team) twice.

I hope I'm making sense here.

Yeah you are, the problem is the travel would be even more insane than it is already. Its hard enough for any team to play back to backs in the west coast, let alone having a lot more of them coming if they do change the sched. The quality of games would go down.

Maybe changing the scheduling isnt the best of ideas.

Say goodbye to the second round for the Raptors if this goes through.
