Nets getting desperate?

Nets Sell Tickets Using Star Opponents

Aug 31, 2009 11:14 AM EST
With a troubled economy, the NBA is bracing for a difficult financial season and clubs are getting creative in order to sell tickets. None more so than the Nets. The team is offering fans a 10-game plan that comes with reversible jerseys that have the name of a Nets' player on one side and an opposing team's player on the other.

Fans can make their choice from among Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Shaquille O'Neal, Dwyane Wade, Dwight Howard, Vince Carter, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce or Ray Allen.

"I don't think it has ever been done before," said Chris Granger, the NBA's senior vice president for team marketing and business operations. "I don't think any team has ever given premium items as part of a promotion that highlights someone from another team."

Nets' president and chief executive Brett Yormark explained the reasoning behind the team's promotion.

"We cater to the casual NBA fan, that's our core audience," Yormark said. "So when you think about every arena selling opposing player jerseys at the concession stands, and when you think about attendance always being greater when you have the key matchups and the best players in town, why wouldn't you do it? It gives the fans another added benefit, not only to embrace their favorite local player, but also a member of the opposition that they also came out to see."

LOL 21st century baby! I learned this as a kid as soon as Carter left boys. This is more of a business than a league.

if they're that desperate then maybe there shouldn't be a franchise in New Jersey.

and i'm not being insesitive to economic hardships, but frankly if a population can't support a team, then it would be best if another more deserving market got one. Like - oh i dunno - how about VANCOUVER?

Do you have any idea how hard it is to get out to East Rutherford from Manhattan on a weeknight to catch a 7pm game? It's no secret the Nets have a difficult time in attracting fans. Shit, the team even had problems filling seats during the playoffs.

it makes sense...
arent the Nets moving to Brooklyn in a few years?
its embarrasing to be a nets fan.

i'd buy the tickets if they gave away reversable jersey's.

The last 3-4 seasons Vancouver was there, the attendance wasn't very good. But you're right, the recession doesn't mean that much in Jersey, they couldn't draw fly's in the booming economic times. Overall shitty market.

Reversable Jersey's.....i don't think i'd want one. I doubt they'd be done properly. Probably look like shit.

They keep saying they're close, but they're so far away. There's no arena for them to play in Brooklyn. They haven't even started construction on that as of yet.

That's a creative idea. Hopefully it works out, when Lebron goes they should only give out Lebron jerseys. That would turn a lot of heads.
