Nene to possibly opt out of final year of contract..

I'd sure as hell over-pay for his services at centre.. Thoughts?

Quote:

Nene said Monday he is strongly considering opting out of the final season of his six-year, $60 million contract, which would pay him $12 million, and testing the free-agent market.

After nine seasons in the NBA, Nene has full control of his future and it could take hard work for the Nuggets to make him happy enough to return.

"I've been here for nine years," said Nene, 28. "If that doesn't work how you want it, you need to sit down and evaluate everything and see what you can do."
The overarching issues in this situation are his level of happiness with the Nuggets and, ultimately, his value on the open market.

Wow. that means his agent gotta wiff of something over 12 mill. Poor Nuggets

Chiggmo 05-03-2011 12:28 PM

Isn't he leaving the NBA anyway?

carp 05-03-2011 01:27 PM

5 years and 13M per is a good offer.... a sign and trade would be good, but you take what you can get.

RAPMAN 05-03-2011 01:44 PM

Nene is 28 years old. However, two of those years he played 1 game and 16 games. He has proved he has been durable the last three years. Its worth a shot. Big market for centers this summer (Nene, Jordan, Gasol, Oden, Dalembert).

creative1mm 05-03-2011 03:04 PM

yea I caught the story this morning on hoopshype..
I wouldn't mind taking him

jeffb 05-03-2011 03:07 PM

A front court of NeNe/Davis with Amir and maybe Evans off the bench could be pretty good. I don't know if it can be done but i would try if i were BC. Hell, i would even consider then signing Oden to a small deal as a backup Center if at all possible.

Davis/Amir
NeNe/Oden

yeah, i thought he was gonna go home.

I don't even know if you need to beat 12M a year.

Depending on your belief as to what will happen with the CBA, if you can opt out and get a longer term contract nailed down, I think you should.

Smart move by him and his agent if you ask me.

Snooch 05-03-2011 04:17 PM

Fans here would crucify him.

He only averages 6.9 boards per game career(7,5 last couple of years)

And as it has been pointed out here about a kazillion times a center needs to average at least 9 per game to be a viable option on the court.

He does play with such players like Marcus Camby, Kenyon Martin, and Anderson. Put him in the Raps especially with Bargnani, he'll be getting 9 to 10boards a game. Look at Reggie rebounding numbers before he joined our team. Plus he defends the paint. Fans appreciate effort and hustle. Something Bargnani doesn't deliver.

so the theory of him playing beside solid rebounders works for him, but Bargs playing beside top 10 rebounders in the league every year doesnt give him any slack?

Last time we talked about Nene it turned into a 20 page thread on religion. Pass. :p

Shifty.py 05-03-2011 08:41 PM

it's a lot of money
probably bargaining for a hefty extension

js12 05-03-2011 08:48 PM

I'm not sure if he's the type of guy to overpay. He's not exactly young and doesn't have a lot of further potential. If his performance does not keep up, he will end up another as another bad contract that the Raptors will need to shed.

There was a reason why Bargs plays besides top 10 rebounders in the league every year. Because Bosh and Reggie Evans have to compensate for Bargnani lack of effort and laziness in rebounding.

Impossible - current CBA expires before he can sign another deal, so opting out simply guarantees he won't get the money on his contract next year, and will sign his contract in the first year of the new CBA, instead of the 2nd.

your right. hes the type of guy a contender would pick up last minute to seal the deal.
Kinda like what Miami did with Bibby.

With all the crying out for a C all year, all last year, you actually think this guy isn't going to be offered a huge deal? He's absolutely not the cheap, end of the road option Bibby was. Unbelievable that anyone would pretend Nene wouldn't be chased by many teams.... he may end up on a contender, but not like Bibby did.

This.

But on another related note, I'm glad to see he is staying in the league rather than moving back to Brazil to start a church.

dfunkie1 05-04-2011 04:10 PM

i was under the impression that he talking about going back to brazil after his next contract, not his current.

always been a fan and i wouldn't have a problem giving him the monies mentioned throughout the thread. don't know how we'll get him that money, but hopefully we'll be able to work something out with the nuggets.

now is the time to start sending bargnani highlite videos to denver and for barbosa to do some recruiting!

I went back and looked and the article I found stated that he was open to playing until 2016 or until he had enough money saved. So, yeah, you're right, he has been open to the idea of signing another deal. In the past, it just didn't seem like a guarantee that he'd stay, since he left the door open to leaving if he had enough money to accomplish his goals.

I'm just happy he is staying in the league. I like his game. He does a little bit of everything.

In today's Espn Hollinger Chat, Portland will be in the market for a big and shooting.

I wouldn't mind a trade for Batum and Oden. The good thing about Oden, he's young, players with recurring injuries have chance of healing. Look at Amare with his major knee injury. If the moves works out, we have two positions filled for the future. If it doesn't, we have one position filled. Batum is great compliment for Derozan.

Don't see us getting both for just Bargs.
