Thumbs up NBA TV ratings up 30%

Wow that's a large jump. More and more people choosing to watch their surround sound Plasma/LCD's in the comfort of their home.

Quote:
Television ratings for games on ESPN and TNT are up more than 30 percent so far this season compared to last year.

Quote:
Sure, the Heat are drawing big audiences after a summer of free agent intrigue concluded with LeBron James(notes) and Chris Bosh(notes) joining Dwyane Wade(notes) in Miami. Ratings for Heat games on ESPN have increased 69 percent from last season.

But take out the five matchups involving Miami, and the network’s NBA coverage is still up 23 percent from a year ago.

“It tipped off with a great deal of interest about the Heat and about ‘The Decision,”’ NBA Commissioner David Stern said last week, “and it seems to have gone from there, when the story lines have unfolded were not about the Heat initially—except about their struggles—but about San Antonio, New Orleans’ start, the Knicks’ start, the Lakers’ start and the Lakers suddenly stumbling a little bit, the Celtics’ strength.

“It’s across the board,” Stern said, “a whole variety of story lines.”

The successes of several prominent franchises have boosted viewership numbers. Ratings for ESPN’s games are up 58 percent in Los Angeles, 56 percent in Boston and 36 percent in New York.

“It’s sort of all jelling in a way,” Stern said, “and our broadcasters are reaping the benefits of it, which is terrific for us because they’ve made this huge investment in us over the years.”

honestly when 3D gets a little more advanced and more are broadcasted in it...remember hearing the Knicks/Heat game was in 3D for those with the setup, i don't see the point of going to games unless u really enjoy the atmosphere, like around playoff time.

I think you'll see a revese of price
tickets go down
pat to watch on TV goes up

arenas will be set up as hollywood sets in the future
play in front of a green screen or mock set and fill in effects around the court

I was just reading an article yesterday that stated that 3D television was actually gonna go the way of the dodo due to the cost of production (i.e. technology, having to have 2 crews at a game etc.)

So TV ratings up, but attendance is down. Yep, nice spin Stern.

Make it seem as the NBA is all rosy when it's not. Yay!

I also wonder what role people not being able to afford going to a game has in this all. With a ridiculously high unemployment rate, staying home and watching game is a more viable alternative.

BRI is up quite a bit and I think that's all that matters to them.

Attendance is down 5% and ratings are up 30%, I don't think Stern is losing much sleep. And yes I would say the enonomy has a lot to do with the softer attendance numbers.

Yes, but attendance is a bigger number because of what it means to owners:

i.e. merchandise and concession stand losses. Tickets are only one part of the equation.
