Default NBA thinking about contracting NBA teams in bad markets

Quote:
NBA Floats Contraction, Performance Standards To Avoid Big Pay
But a source tells CBS Sports that the NBA is proposing alternative means of restoring profitability to its owners, which would not require the players to take a drastic reduction in pay.

Among these alternatives is the possibility of contracting whole NBA franchises, eliminating teams that operate in less attractive markets.

According to the report, league officials have communicated to the union that "significant savings could be achieved by changing the NBA's economic model without forcing the players to take such a big cut."

Besides contraction, the league is floating ideas surrounding shorter contracts and less guaranteed money.

What the league terms "modest performance standards" for players could replace the need to contract franchises or force players to accept large salary cuts.

In other words, teams would find savings from being able to reduce or remove the salaries of players such as Eddy Curry who were signed to big deals but did not perform.

After the end of the formal media session, David Stern conceded that in general the NBA "business is good," pointing out that player salaries will rise as revenues rise.

"It's a sliding scale," the commissioner said.

I'm curious what they would mean by bad markets.

Personally, I wouldn't want any of the teams to be gone.

Stern playing the game so he can get fans on his side to reduce payroll
players - make to much money, which will result in your bad market team being contracted

I would say, teams bleeding money and would look at the 5 worst attendance teams in the league. But really, the only teams that come to mind are Memphis, NO, Minnesota?? I would say NJ but they have a rich owner and a new arena on the way. Maybe Charlotte?

I can't see them eliminating more then 2-3 teams. Give Seattle a new team.

Charlotte just built a new arena, its would be a nightmare trying to get out
and its in a basketball state with MJ
remove a team from Minny again?

only 2 teams I see are NOLA and Memphis

contract the Clips just for the sake of getting rid of their bad mojo, even if u move team the bad luck will follow

I don't know there is alot of decent players that don't have nba teams to play on and not in europe

just look at the waiver wire

every year the world is producing better basketball players, Brazil,Australia, China, Italy, France, Spain, Canada, Lithuania, Serbia, Croatia, Turkey, Argentina, England, Slovenia, and the U.S

also U.S players are starting to lose more and more spots on NBA rosters, in Europe they have rules limiting how many U.S born players play in there leagues so those spots always stay the same

I think in the next 10 years there could be a greater influx of talent from all over the world maybe even countries we don't see coming,

it would be brutal losing teams when the leagues talent pool is becoming bigger every year

Scare tactic. I don't think anyone really believes that Stern would do this. It's just another bargaining chip since it would mean less available jobs- last thing the players union wants to see.

I disagree. Less teams the better. I dont' go out of my way to watch the Wizards, Bucks, Pacers etc. play ball. I could care less about most of them and if they are gone all the better for the TV viewer

Except the Raptors continue with having good attendance and revenue numbers even though they suck every year.

If I was Stern, I'd contract ATL, CHA, IND, MEM, MIN, NOH. Those teams, MAYBE besides CHA now, are losing money rapidly every season and their fans just dont show up to the games. You get rid of 6 teams. the talent pool is so much better and the quality of basketball would be the best its ever been.

I don't know about that. We seem to have a fair bit of international popularity. At least i believe we do. They still like the Raptors in Turkey don't they?

Good call, because seriously why are NBA players getting 100 of millions of dollars to play basketball?

Because the market was dictating it. Thats why.

If there is a payroll reduction it will be similar to the NHL model.... you're still gonna have guys getting a lot..... just not as much.
