Thumbs up NBA playoff ratings up nearly 30%

Article from a couple days ago...

Quote:
NEW YORK -- Television viewership is up nearly one-third for the NBA playoffs, and the conference finals are off to a strong start.

Games in the first two rounds averaged an audience of 4.92 million people, compared with 3.74 million last year. The conference semifinals averaged 6.14 million viewers, a 28 percent increase from 2010.

Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals was watched by 11.1 million people, the most for an NBA game on cable. The previous record of 10.8 million was for Michael Jordan's last All-Star Game in 2003, when the population was smaller.

The Chicago Bulls' 103-82 win over the Miami Heat on Sunday on TNT earned a 6.2 rating, up 41 percent from the Suns-Lakers Western Conference opener on the network last year.

The start of the Western Conference finals Tuesday will be a test for whether the NBA can keep up the ratings momentum, with the small-market Oklahoma City Thunder facing the Dallas Mavericks. That game can be seen at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Ratings represent the percentage of homes with televisions tuned in to a program.

Not surprising... people either...

1) are casual fans of the game and enjoy watching some of the best players play

2) are rooting like hell for MIA to fail

3) are avid bball fans who are just enjoying what promises to be an excellent series

Say what you want.... but I think that the MIA trio is good for bball.

I hope that more stars follow suit and join forces. I'd love to see 6-10 powerhouse teams that stand a chance of winning it all rather than 20 "meh" teams that are just spinning their wheels.

IMO these have been great playoffs to watch, one of the more enjoyable, exciting in years.

David Stern should just let Miami into the NBA Finals

Teams are more exciting now. I think everyone is sick of Boston, L.A, and San Antonio.

The difference this year is obviously Miami first of all, but also the younger(except Dallas) quicker funner teams to watch are succeeding and beating the older guard. The times have officially changed with this postseason.

I wouldnt want to see more stars come together though, I disagree there. I'd rather see more teams like the Bulls who are built around 1 guy with a bunch of really good players, so theres even more parody and the talent is more balanced around the league. Though if stars were to allign I'd like to see CP3 and Dwight get together and demolish Miami.

Rose really needs another star alongside him.

I was really getting tired of the single franchise guy carrying a team formula. It just produces micro-managed, boring basketball out of necessity. I'm loving the change.

it might not even be a star. He could surely use a guy that can create on the wings a little bit. Maybe a sixth man type of scorer? Rose just ends up working too hard.
