Default NBA is planning to use a centralized replay center

Quote:
By next season, the NBA is planning to create and use a centralized replay center to help referees and speed up games.

"What we're in the process of doing is we're going to create a central location where we'll have people there who will be watching every game," NBA president of basketball operations Rod Thorn said Friday. "When the referees go over to the side, in many instances the [central replay center] will already know what happened and they'll be able to tell the referee, which will hopefully take less time."

The project is one of new commissioner Adam Silver's initiatives. The NBA would be mimicking a system the NHL started in 2011, when it created what is known as the "situation room" in Toronto where all goals from all games can be reviewed with calls communicated to the officials on the ice.

That experiment has been successful in shortening the time replays take in addition to removing some pressure from the referees on site.

I think Stern has been ahead of the curve on many things, but this one the NBA should have done a while ago.

BTW, do the NFL and MLB do this?

NFL has a room like that, and they advise coaches whether to challenge play or not

Not sure about NFL
Pretty sure there is no such thing for MLB...but hey, they're stuck in the dark ages so it doesn't surprise me

I'm probably wrong though

Huhhh, you mean a team room? I'm assuming the league isn't advising coaches on what to challenge. I don't watch the NFL at all so i have no clue how they do it.

Btw, the NHl only started this in 2011? Thought it was like a decade ago.

Yea, It is a team room that advise coaches.
Refs though go to review it themselves, there is no such a thing for Refs

It's about time. Hopefully this will clean up the game a bit, but we are still going to have to deal with the flopping bullshit.

They should just hold a meeting and get this approved before the 2nd half of the season starts. This will be huge for the momentum and flow of the game, and the entertainment value of each game will go way up if they do this right. The 2 minute stoppages when the first replay shows the refs what they need to see in order to make the correct call, and they still look at 100 replays, then talk about it, is complete nonsense. When there's something in professional sports that makes fans turn away consistently game to game, you'd think they'd look after this as soon as the problem arose.

Confirmed

The NBA will have a centralized replay center for games next season.

Referees review plays on a monitor at halfcourt, which has led to long delays in play.

Tank gawd. Those long delays during the game kills the everything. It usually increases the time of the last two minutes to like 30 minutes. Hopefully the centralized center will be quick

Actually mlb has one now. Started it this year I believe. Its still weird though, instead of a challenge flag the manager will just go up and talk to the umpire until his staff gives him the go ahead on whether or not to ask for a replay

They should have it like the NFL. Two challenge calls. The first one you lose costs a 20 sec timeout. The 2 challenge you lose burns a full timeout. As long as you are correct you keep the challenges

The MLB does have one. But works like the NFL one. The Jays (along with every other team) for example have hired a guy that sits in the dugout and replays a number of questionable decisions. He he finds something out of place, he can signal it to the Manager, who can then challenge the play (I think they can do this 1-2x/game)

yeah, but the manager can go argue as many calls as before. so they use that now to give the guy time to verify the call. really slows down the game that way.

One sided calls can still occur with a centralized replay system

But at least we won't have to wait 2-5 minutes for each call to be made. All the refs would need to do is get the headset on for 10 seconds and get the call from the head ref from their league office and its done.
