Thumbs up NBA to penalize floppers, and possibly change the goaltending rule

Quote:
Stern’s new committee is expected to work on two major rules changes right away: Adopting the international rule for goaltending, meaning that balls could be legally knocked off the rim or backboard that now would result in a basket; and penalizing “floppers.”

Stern has talked to GMs in the past about changing the goaltending rule, but never got anywhere. But now he’ll have a more receptive group to consider what would be a dramatic change in the defensive rules.

“I think it’s time to look at (flopping) in a more serious way, because it’s only designed to fool the referee,” Stern told ABC during Game 1 of the Heat-Pacers semifinal series. “It’s not a legitimate play in my judgment. I recognize if there’s contact (you) move a little bit, but some of this is acting. We should give out Oscars rather than MVP trophies.”

Perhaps Stern should have the people in charge of officiating teach the refs what a flop is. He was never able to convince the 30 general managers that there had to be a crackdown on the practice, with accompanying penalties.

“Some years ago I told the competition committee that we were going to start fining people for flopping, and then suspending,” he said. “And I think they almost threw me out of the room, (saying), ‘No, let it be.’”

Now, Stern has, in effect, thrown the GMs out of the room, while installing his new committee in to carry out his agenda.

It's hard to tell who's flopping. Kinda like when The NHL started cracking down on diving. Are they still calling hooking penalties and at the same time calling a diving penalty? lol

Point is, these kinds of calls are simply a hit and miss and a guessing game.

a diving call was made just the other night i believe...after the LA player took a good chop across the back of the legs...but he embellished it and they called it

NBA has had 2 different sets of rules for quite some time now...only the blind can't see that

oh and don't get me started on the "he hasn't earned that call yet"

I'm not a fan of the goaltending rule. I'm sure someone like JaVale McGee will be happy.

The goaltending rule is nonsense. If I read it right, when the ball hits the glass first and a player pins it, it will be legal now correct?

And I hate the rule anyway. Shooters bounces will be no more. Scoring will go way down.

The flopping rule I fully support. Its very easy to tell the blatant flopping apart from regular charges. One season of fines and suspensions will stop the flopping altogether and make players play more straight up and try to make plays on the ball and rotate quicker to the spot instead of just throwing themselves infront of the ball and then throwing themselves back. I hope they penalize the offensive floppers just as much though obviously as it's often worse than the defensive flopping.

if it hits the rim, then the player can take it off, if it hits the backboard it still can't be touched until it hits the rim. It doesn't actually happen that often in a game - although the rule has never been in the NBA before with players like Dwight Howard involved.

It's a rule that favors taller players and players who are more athletic than others. No timing or positioning is involved.

There are a ton of blatantly obvious flops that can easily be definitive.

They both sound like great ideas to me. The flopping rule is probably more of a deterrent from the refs: "More crap like that and I'm calling it" kind of thing.

i'm not liking the changes, nba has better athletes, knocking off the rim will get out of control with guys like dwight howard and chandler

also i like flopping, i like the idea of out smarting your opponent, plus sometimes its actually a foul, plus the the player who takes the foul gets angry and stirs up some emotion and anger int he game which the nba needs more of, i love when players yell at each other during games

Floppers should be punished and this is a good step in that direction. I wouldn't be surprised if the flopping foul ends up being rarely used but carries a harsh penalty like a technical. As for the goaltending rule, coaches and commentators have been saying it should be like it is in Europe for years now. You still can't touch the ball on a downward arc or pin lay-ups on the glass. It means that you lose shooters' bounces, but it brings back the importance of the big man in a guard dominated league. Honestly I think they should bring back hand-checking.

FLopping is a hard thing to call some are extremely good at it. Personally I think Refs have enough to worry about and to introduce them to penalize it during the game is not right. Flopping should be done in the video booth and penalizations should be given after the game is done.

In other words treat flopping like you would cheating. Take it right out of the game

Correct me if I'm wrong. If the ball bounces off the rim and is now rolling on top of the rim it's fair play? Anyone can touch it and grab it?

Don't like the goaltending rule. Javale is gunna be DPOY till another athletic freak comes along :/ It involves no skill, no bball IQ. Imagine Defending people who can't shoot but can just lay it in, usually offglass, like Rondo. He just got way easier to defend around the rim, his only option just became make it all net, or no points at all.

Wait... Amir can be our goal keeper and shit now. He's got some hops right? Same with Demar? OMG. Bring in some more young athletics, fuck skills, we just got some GREAT defensive players now. I can just see it now, "Run towards the basket and just fucking whack the ball no matter where it is" drills.
