NBA mulling idea of five-team expansion in Europe

What do you guys think? I'm not too sure I'm sold on the idea.

The current idea would be to create five new teams in major markets to form a "European'' division within the NBA. The teams would play the full 82-game schedule and compete for the NBA championship. But the proposal is new and many factors will influence the eventual outcome, the league source said.

hmmm....
could be interesting.

I wonder who would land a team?

Now instead of cities, i'll choose countries.
1. somewhere in spain for sure.
2. Russia (moscow)?
3. Greece?
4. France (Paris)?
5. Germany?

Dr. J. Naismith 02-13-2008 12:18 PM

Definitely Italy and likely London too.

not going to work

Belsius 02-13-2008 12:23 PM

teams would be:

- Madrid for sure, they are already building a huge stadium for Real Madrids basketball.
- Rome.
- Athens.
- London.
- Moscow.

Im pretty sure at least in spain is not going to work. the spanish league is too big here to let them get the best player for one team here.

I just think travel and time differences will be problematic. I mean, not so much for teams in the East, but when teams from the west coast have to fly to Europe on a regular basis for games. It was screw with players bodies too much in my opinion. :(

i dunno... it could work...

but what about player salaries? could these teams compete with the payrolls that NBA teams dish out?

And doc... I actually don't think that it would fly in london. Sure it's a HUGE city and all, but basketball is really far down the line in terms of public interest. I actually don't think Londoners would support it after the "Novelty" wears off.

I only see something like the euroleague but with the NBA involved.

Belsius 02-13-2008 12:30 PM

What you dont understand, the biggest problem is not the scheduel. The problem is nobody will wants (mysef included) the NBA to run over our leagues. This would destroy our leagues.

Bad idea.

It'll be about as smart a move as expanding the CFL to the US was.

Stern's a dolt.

Stern was on the fan last week and he said "not happening" so I am confused.

heres an article on the subject, not a lot of people think this could happend anytime soon. Again, the problem is how this NBA teams and the national leagues would co-exist.

Kuzzy 02-18-2008 03:36 PM

The chances ot Toronto getting a team in the NFL are 100 times greater :).
hope that says it all

pimpery 02-18-2008 10:54 PM

umm the reason the bills are gonna play pre season and regular season games in toronto is testing the market for future expansion ;)

This would be the biggest mistake in sports history if this happened. The players would despise going to europe on back to backs or just for long trips. Not only that, but itd decrease the talent pool even more. If anything the NBA should be looking to get rid of a couple teams to make the talent pool that much better.

Fuck marketing to europe. You dont see any other league thinking about this fucking stupid idea.

Go there once in every couple years for a preseason game and put the NBA on cable in those countries. Putting teams there is beyond stupidity. Stern should be fired for even thinking about this.

Belsius 02-19-2008 03:50 PM

Actually, Soccer leagues premiership, and Spanish league, are planning on playing some of their best games, in other countries. But not expanding their leagues.

I dont like the idea. But I think it would be a good idea to make a competition like eurolague, were the best teams of each league play eachother. Just like in soccer.

pimpery 02-20-2008 12:57 AM

Problem is, to make NBA players care about playing say the Spanish league champions. Most of these guys would probably take it as a joke, winning the NBA title is their dream, after a long year and a huge playoff grind you want them to get pumped up to play some team they deem to be a joke? I just dont see it really happening, and i dont see fans over here getting excited for it. The union would want more $ for this happening as compensation and theres just way too many issues. It would be international ball all over again, the nba champs taking every1's best shot after grinding a hard ass year of the hardest league in the world to play in, and the euro champs being hyped up trying to prove something, probably a good situation for them, but not for the nba.

Belsius 02-20-2008 06:18 AM

eeeee, do you even know what the champions league is?
