NBA Considering Draft Wheel System To Eliminate Lottery

The NBA is considering a proposal to eliminate the draft lottery as we currently know it in favor of a draft wheel.

The draft wheel would allow team to cycle through every draft slot and be guaranteed one top-six pick every five seasons and at least one top-12 pick in every four-year span.

The system is designed to protect against teams attempting to be bad or letting themselves be bad for a high draft pick.

The concept has gained traction in the higher levels of the NBA's league office and could be proposed to owners sometime in 2014, according to sources.

Others have expressed early opposition to the proposal.

Lol that's dumb, we'll see the top teams getting high picks when they don't even need it.

Which means them possibly trading the pick(s). IMO this makes things a lot more interesting.

Because the teams that spend all the money to hire the best NBA superstars...

deserve the best draft picks too

Honestly, it doesn't bother that everyone gets the chance to land the #1 pick. It eliminates tanking..

Toby 12-23-2013 03:10 PM

Who's tanking? I see no tanks.
Suns were a guaranteed tank, and they look like a playoff team.

Toby 12-23-2013 03:14 PM

Bucks are stanky as heck, but you got to remember there big Sanders guy busted his hand in a drunken brawl while out clubbing. Without that guy blocking shots, the Bucks have no chance to win. This is no tank, this is bad management putting the load of the team's defense on a hot headed player like Larry Sanders.

I'm not a fan of this idea, mostly because the years that MIL or UTA are 1st in the draft, a top level prospect will be more likely to wait to come out until they can possibly go to a LA/NY/CHI market when they have a top pick. Plus the great teams getting a top pick in the draft while a struggling small market team getting a 30th pick when they have 0 chance of improving the next year cant be good for the league, and is probably worse than whats happening now.

I think the wheel idea is something that college basketball(because players stay longer in hopes of going to a specific group of teams) and large market winning organization would love, but it still leaves the small market losers in the dust.

Listen, what does bother me is that wheel would be loaded in gold. Laker gold
That #1 spot would drop right on Laker land, and everyone would have a cow, but we'd all have to suck it.

rapsmannn 12-23-2013 04:08 PM

that doesn't sound good, silver is going to have to figure how to fix the draft and conferences, there is no way the raptors should make the playoffs unless there at least
.500 team

overall playoff seating would be nice

these two topics have been issue for the nba for years, especially in seasons where teams are all trying to copy the cavs and spurs and tank for a no 1 seed

I think it's pretty dumb, but oh well.

just4_raps 12-23-2013 04:59 PM

why don't they just include NON-PLAYOFF teams in the wheel?

rotate those teams only. if u make the playoffs the next year you're not included in the wheel.

if you come off a playoff year and do not make the playoffs the next year you'd be at the "end/bottom" of the wheel.

KoolAid 12-23-2013 05:08 PM

It's a stupid idea. With this you're going to get teams stuck at the bottom for 10 years at a time once their no. 1 pick retires or if they pick a bust. And if you have the choice of declaring for the draft and getting picked by the Bucks or waiting a year and going to LA or Miami, which are you going to pick? Having a predetermined draft order is not going to work.

I think the best thing to stop tanking is a lottery taking into account the past three seasons. No team is going to tank for three straight years just to get one high pick. This also helps prevent teams that have been good/even mediocre get hit with a bunch of injuries and luck out come draft time. Finally, it helps teams who suck get really good really fast because they'll still get high picks in consecutive years.

Carlos Danger 12-23-2013 05:39 PM

Brutal idea.

I think the idea is bad. I purpose they do this on live TV:

- Every team gets one ball and we see Silver mark down each team name on one ball a piece and throw them all into the ball-popping bin.

- Next, ball-popping bin is turned on to mix up all the balls. After approx 1 min the machine is turned off. During this period Silver is to be blind folded with multiple items, like clothing, garbage bags, don't really care just something to make sure he can't see a thing. He is banned from wearing any ear piece.

- Silver walks up to the ball bin, turns his back to the bin and reaches back to pick out a ball. The ball with the team name on it is shown and the vice president reads it out. Do this 30 times for the first round and then throw all the balls back in a repeat the process. The key is everything has to be on live TV, no behind the scenes bullshit.

Now I know people will say it's not fair if a great team gets the first pick, but this really is the only way to make everything even for every team.

All players wanting to enter the draft must agree to enter the NBA draft 1 day before the ball selection takes place, that way no player knows what team is going to get the first pick. This prevents players from staying an extra year in college in hopes of a big market team getting the 1st pick and selecting them.

In regards to cleaning up the playoff standings, it's simple, just have the top 8 teams in each conference make the playoffs. None of this, you need at least one team from each division representing in the playoffs. It should just be top 8 teams in the East and top 8 teams in the West. Your playoff number depends on your record. Tie breakers are done based on the two teams head to head meetings, so if LA beat the Suns 3-1 in the 4 game series in the season then they would get in the playoffs because they won the tie breaker. If both teams are tied 2-2 in the season series then it goes to total points in the 4 games combined. Which ever teams has the highest point total moves on.

Can't rig that! No way!

In all seriousness though, this is closest to the best idea. A bit extreme, but I like it.

Wheel of Fortune lottery?

They should just play jeopardy for first pick
