Thumbs down NBA.com: Best athletes ever

Is this a joke? Gerald Wallace & Dwight Howard, but no Vince Carter or Kobe Bryant?

Credibility lost!

Quote:
10. Gerald Wallace

Huh? Here's the deal: Wallace is our stand-in -- or rather, our soar-in, given his vertical ability -- for all the tremendous athletes who either just missed, or maybe never came close to, great-player status. Like Evans. Like Tony Harris, a 6-foot-3 guard from the University of New Orleans who had stints with Philadelphia and Boston but was a dynamo in the CBA and scored 105 points one night in the Philippines. Or like Kris Bruton, a second-round pick by Chicago in 1994 whose skills -- and ability to dunk on a 12-foot, 1-inch rim in one contest -- qualified him for a career with the Harlem Globetrotters.

Wallace, a veteran of nine NBA seasons with Sacramento and Charlotte, was "shockingly athletic" when he got here, said Rick Adelman, his first pro coach. Earned himself a nickname too: "Crash."

"I never saw a guy who could run and jump like that," Adelman said. "He played one year at Alabama and played in the AAU, where his whole life he just stood around on defense and knew nothing about how to play. But you let him run and jump, he was almost dangerous to himself. The stuff he would try was just crazy. I never saw anybody cover ground like him, and I saw him do dunks that were incredible. He's developed into a nice player where he uses his athletic ability to his advantage. But when he came in as a rookie, he was so raw ... but he made practices fun to watch."

Lebron at 2 is more baffling for me...Sure he's a hybrid of strength and finesse, but I don't think he's any more athletic than Drexler, VC, MJ, Kobe. Just more propaganda I guess. Furthermore, where's T-MAC? Clearly he's broken down now, but in his prime was there ever a similiar athlete? A 6-10ish guy who can do everything including jaw-dropping athletic maneuvers.

Where's Karl Malone on this list? Dude was a true athlete.

David Robinson is a good choice.

Jumping over a 7 foot man doesn't count I guess?

So much disrespect to Carter, it's ridiculous.

Vince Carter is the greatest athlete to ever play the game - a horrible omission.

Gerald Wallace? Great athlete, nowhere near top 10.

Perhaps people have forgotten, but Shaq was a pretty good athlete when he was younger.

Barkley as well.

Even D-Wade should be put over Gerald Wallace. I think Wallace was added in there because he is averaging 11.5rpg at 6'7".

dude career average wise vc is not athletic. Plus kobe is more of a finesse player than pure athlete. I agree with the list, especially the number 1, but nate robinson should be on that list too

Carter has a good vertical leap, and he's a good dunker.

This article is about "athletes"

Carter isn't a great athlete.

Carter's been a shitty professional but to even suggest he's not a great athlete is a crock man!

No NBA player has ever been able to do some of the stuff that guy did on the court and that's not just dunking. 2+ knee surgeries, 30+ and the guy could still drop 30+ without breaking a sweat.

Okay, it's obvious most people recognize Carter's amazing athletecism, but I want to provide a couple of concrete details to further back it up. First off, though, I'd like to point out that Carter was one of the best dunkers of all time because of his body control, not simply becuase he could "jump high." Lots of players in the NBA can jump high, but only a handful have spectacular body control that allows them to do the things VC is capable of doing. Carter's body control extends beyond basketball, though. In High School, during his Junior year, Carter was the captain of his school's Volleyball team and was voted "all-county." Division one schools were starting to recruit Carter to play Volleyball at the college level. But Carter was so fucking talented, that he stopped playing Volleyball so that he could be the Drum Major in his school's band (another example of his body control). Carter could do so many things. If there was 36 hours in a day, and the season's didn't overlap, he probably could have been on 3 college sport teams (volleyball, basketball, and track) and played in the college band. Dude had, and still has, sick physical talents.

For the record, I think Carter is douchenozzle. You don't need to like a guy in order to be able to acknowledge his physical gifts. Just saying.

What a lot of people don't realize today is that most of your strength comes from your core.
