NBA bans Butler from chewing straws

Quote:
NBA executive vice president Stu Jackson phoned Butler on Tuesday and told him to leave his straws at home. Butler did not play against the Los Angeles Lakers due to a reaction to medication, so he was unavailable for comment.

But the Mavs confirmed that the league is serious about outlawing straw chewing.

"It's against the rules," Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said.

"It's a safety issue, period," NBA senior vice president for basketball communications Tim Frank said Thursday.

A local radio sports talk show host encouraged fans to come to Wednesday night's game against the Lakers bearing straws to show their support for Butler, who came to the Mavericks as part of a seven-player trade with the Washington Wizards on Feb. 13.

His Mavericks teammates, including Dirk Nowitzki, poked fun at their teammate by chewing straws during warm-ups earlier this week.

The habit is not new to Butler, who reportedly has chewed plastic straws at a rate of 12 per game for years. He disclosed in a chat on NBA.com in March 2009 that he started chewing straws in games as a teenager.

"It calmed me down," he said in the chat. "Then it became one of those things you keep doing."

It is a way to calm down. I don't know how it makes him have issues. It's better for him to be calm them to be an outrage.

how does chewing straws mean he has issues lol?
dude came from a real bad background, but his head on straight, give him some credit.
hes like one of the guys you've played with in highschool that has all the talent in the world and blew it getn into bad situations and all
but he managed to stay out of it and make it to the bigtime
if there were more athletes with his mental discipline this would be an even better game

In case you didn't notice at the All-Star Game while he was on the bench he was holding a pair of nail clippers.

Sometimes I wonder if the league just makes up rules to annoy the players.

Damn. I heard quitting straws is as hard as quitting smoking.

next up for Stu Jackson: Banning Gerald Wallace from chewing on his mouth guard.

I've never heard of anyone chewing straws. I guess it's worth a try.

He's been doing it since highschool until now. Why did they suddenly try to adress the safety problems behind this now?
