Smile NBA attendance, popularity up considerably over last season

This is from a couple weeks ago but the trend seems to have continued. I think fans are indifferent to lockouts these days and just do other things until it comes back.

Quote:
During the NBA lockout you heard many sports fans complaining about the NBA, saying things like nobody cares about the NBA or if it ever comes back. Even some pundits who follow the NBA and earn a living by doing so, had completely written off the 2011-12 season.

Well the NBA ended its lockout, and started its abbreviated season on Christmas Day, December 25, 2011, and NBA fans tuned in and turned out in droves to watch the games.

Knicks vs Celtics Christmas Day Game Draws Highest Cable Ratings Ever for Holiday Game

The New York Knicks vs Boston Celtics game on Christmas Day set a new record as the most watched game on cable on Christmas. The game did a 4.1 overnight rating, which was a 48% increase over last season's Chicago Bulls vs Knicks game. The Knicks vs Celtics was also the fourth most watched regular season game ever on cable.

Ratings Up for Almost All Christmas Day Games

All the other Christmas Day NBA games, except for the Chicago Bulls vs Los Angeles Lakers on ABC, did much better ratings than last year. The Bulls vs Lakers game did a 6.4 rating, which was down 6% from last season's Miami Heat vs Lakers game.

The Heat vs Dallas Mavericks game on ABC, which featured a rematch of the teams in last season's NBA Finals, did a 5.6 rating, which was up 6% over last year's Celtics vs Orlando Magic game.

The Magic vs Oklahoma City Thunder game on ESPN was up 36% over last season's Denver Nuggets vs Thunder game. Guess Carmelo Anthony in New York is a bigger TV draw than Melo in Denver.

I'm a big Carmelo Anthony fan, and have been ever since he won the NCAA Championship in 2003 for my favorite college basketball team, the Syracuse Orange. I liked watching Melo play in Denver, but it's a lot easier for me to watch him play for the Knicks (I live in New Jersey).

The Los Angeles Clippers vs Golden State Warriors game was up a whopping 77% from last season's Portland Trail Blazers vs Warriors game.

NBA Attendance Up So Far in 2011-12 Season from Last Season's Average

During the 2010-11 season, the 30 NBA teams collectively averaged 17,318 fans per game. So far in the 2011-12 season, attendance at NBA games is averaging 18,966 per game. That's almost a 10% increase in attendance. I know you can't read too much into that yet, but it's still impressive.

Despite Lockout, NBA is Still Popular

It's still early in the abbreviated 2011-12 NBA season, but so far NBA fans are turning out and tuning in games at much higher levels than they did last season. The idea that nobody cares about the NBA, which many people tried to say during the lockout, is proven wrong by the TV ratings and game attendance so far in the 2011-12 season.

People missed it. Its not too surprising, don't know if the attendance will stay up. The Stats on the Golden State vs Clippers is pretty lol. Did the average fan even know who the Clippers were before Blake?

Same as last season, we're averaging about 16,550. Many games in the 14-15K range and the odd 16-17k range like last night. Considering how bad we are our attendance is pretty good. Did you watch our game last week in washington? They looked like they had 6-7k there at the most.

Yep, saw that.

NBA needs to invest in some seat fillers. Gotta be better for team morale.

Actually, we're averaging 15,700 for home games, which is down around a 1000 per game from 2011, which was down a 1000 per game from 2010 and another 1000 from 2009 when we averaged around 18,700.

Really? Oh, last week I saw it at 16,480 or something like that. Either way I don't think our attendance is that bad at all for this kind of team. I don't have a problem with it. Last night was a good crowd, but really with this schedule the attendance will be up and down. Especially during the week against shit teams. Bad teams take a hit in attendance, that's normal and is probably a good thing imo.

However, those are purchased seats, if you were to count how many are ACTUALLY @ the game, I'm sure the Raptors numbers are significantly down (there were a lot of empty seats during the Minnesota/Sacramento games).

Also, popularity/attendance is a hilarious article. It basically shows that the exterior of the league (the strong centres of the league) are doing well and healthy (also, take into account size of the arenas to figure out attendance). However, when I watch games in the other locations, e.g. Charlotte, there's a definite problem that the league is turning a blind eye to and bull shit journalism like this, does nothing but trump up the league instead of examining why, the game today, has issues that could hamper it 10 sooner rather than later.

Exactly. To be this bad and still average 16k ish is impressive when you look at the other basement dwellers. Now, when this team starts being a playoff team again and the attendance doesn't go up then we can worry. But right now i have no problem with the attendance.

Well, to be fair, every leafs season ticket holder is also a Raps season ticket holder.
Isn't it how that works?

I'd be more impressed if there were people sitting in a good number of those sold seats.

well atleast we know that we got fan support, only team in Canada should get that. I'm saying this once, and you can quote me. Vancouver would probably sell out more seats if they had a team but guess what? We don't got a team ): So raps all the way!

Also consider the teams who have come into the ACC so far this year...Pacers (2), cavs, nets, T'wolves, kings...hardly draws. The pacers are a good team but there aren't any ticket sellers on that team. You could make a case for the T'wolves but Rubio isn't there yet I don't think and love will never be the type to draw the fair weather fan.

When the lakers and heats of the league start coming around you'll start to see some sellouts. 16,000 per for a shit team playing boring teams is pretty damn good. This is one of the best fan bases in the nba.

For our team right now, with maybe 1 Allstar quality player, we're doing pretty good attendance wise, look at Mapleleafs, they've never won a cup in years, but the fan support is tremendous.
