For me, it doesn't feel right to replace the name of the sports team with the name of a corporation. What are you playing for?

Replacing? Are we going to get that dramatic?

That's essentially what you are doing. The main focus of the jersey is the logo of a corporation.

For example:

The Arsenal logo is not even a quarter of the sizes of the Nike and Fly Emirates logo. It just doesn't feel right for something to happen in the NBA.

That's not what's happening in the NBA. A couple 2" patches on the shoulders is all they want to do.

But I guarantee you- in a few years, businesses will want a bigger portion of that jersey. The NBA will look at its revenues from jersey endorsements and agree with the corporations.

I'm pretty sure Raptors will have a pizza pizza logo on their jerseys considering everyone gets free pizza every 100 points.

As much as everyone, including me, is extremely depressed and against this now, a little while after it happens it will become natural and we won't even notice it. Similar to the Miami big 3 villain/hate thing.

It's like a slap in the face for all of the legends who played for teams like the Celtics who wore the jersey with incredible pride. I wonder what players like Bill Russell, Bird, Magic, etc all think about this.

I agree. For some fans and players, basketball is more than a business. Unfortunately, as I said in my other post, this isn't the case and people will move on.

don't buy any jersey. when they see the dip in jersey sales in 2013-2014 they'll go back to no ads

I don't mind the 2x2 patches on the players jersey's. I just hope that we end up with a situation where the jersey's purchased by fans are advertisement free.
No one wants to walk around in a jersey that makes them look like some company's bitch.

I thought it was made clear that it's going to be a 2 square inch patch. In that case i hardly doubt that it will 'replace the team name'. However, sponsorship and corporate backing has been a part of this team and this league since forever. And let's not kid ourselves. It's not like the Raptors are some family run mom and pops basketball team who will suddenly be selling out. We're owned by ML$E which is the corporation of all sports corporations. Anyhoo, sponsorship on uniforms is also something that you see in lots of other leagues around the world for lots of other sports. This is hardly a big deal in my eyes.

When you go to a game it feels like nothing less than end to end commercial representations forced upon you from the time you walk through the gate, right up until someone throws a free sample at you on your way out. A little patch on the uniform doesn't seem all that significant in light of that.

I know in soccer you can buy a jersey without the company name, but you have to pay more. are people going to pay extra to remove a small patch?

From what I've heard you won't have the option. All league official merchandise will be replicas with the ads on them.

I'd be more ok with it if the ads were on player versions only, seems silly to be on fan versions as well.
