Nash has broken nose, says he will be fine

Quote:
Steve Nash has a broken nose but says he doesn't expect it to be a problem for him in Game 4 of the Western Conference finals.

The Phoenix playmaker sustained the slight fracture in a fourth-quarter collision with Derek Fisher in the Suns' 118-109 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday night.

He spoke briefly with reporters after practice on Monday before leaving to have the nose put back in place by a specialist.

Nash played the fourth quarter of Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinals with his right eye swollen shut after taking an inadvertent elbow from San Antonio's Tim Duncan.

"I'm lucky. I've had a couple bumps or bruises that haven't affected my play," Nash said. "Those don't bother you. It's the ones that limit you that you hope you don't have to face."

He said he had broken his nose "a handful" of times and wasn't planning to wear any protective gear or Manu Ginobili-style tape job for Tuesday night's game.

The 36-year-old point guard and two-time league MVP had 17 points and 15 assists on Sunday night with one turnover in 38 minutes. He could be seen on television trying to slide his nose back into place during the game.

"I was trying to move it while it was still fresh," he said. "I know that once it sets it's harder."

Lakers coach Phil Jackson was asked if he thought the injury would affect Nash's performance.

"This guy's gone through a lot of stuff the last two or three years in the playoffs. I don't think it's going to bother him," Jackson said. "On second thought, Ginobili, it really curtailed his game. I thought his game really tailed off after the broken nose, so it's probably an individual thing."

Nash is Canadian, and he joked after his eye injury that his hockey-loving friends make fun of what a soft sport basketball is.

"I think we would have been surprised if he would have gone out of the game," Nash's teammate Grant Hill said. "He's fine. No Friday the 13th mask, no Rip Hamilton mask, no Ginobili tape. He'll be ready to go, so it wasn't that bad."

Nash is getting bashed up pretty hard. Good to see him fight through it and come out like a warrior. What an amazing story it would be if Nash could lead the Suns past the Lakers ... this might be the extra motivation the rest of the Suns players need to step up their D :P I'm looking forward to the next game!!

The guys on the score SAID (can't see in the clip) that they think his nose got knocked out of position and you can see him kind of resetting it right after....

I'm in awe.

Nash and Kobe are unique top 10 players who are throwbacks playing through injuries that would sideline most players.

I knew it! I had a feeling his nose was broking after fisher bashed his head into it. He was trying to crack it back into position after it broke, it looked nasty.

fisher should be fouled out every game in this series after first quarter only
he bumps nash all the time and his anti-screen technique is clearly a foul

perhaps alvin gentry should pay NBA some 25k and let it sound publically

I know some other guys have some big, and fierce looking tattoos, but it's obvious that Steve Nash is the toughest dude in the NBA.

Wow, Nash has a determination to win. No injury's going to stop him from playing in the most important games of the season.

In defence of many players, Nash has injuries on his face, not on his hand, or his elbow or knee or foot. He was first to point that out.

Dude is a true warrior, and people who don't think being a canuck, and growing up in our culture doesn't have an affect on you are crazy. Nash is simply doing what every Hockey player from Minor Bantam to the NHL do regularly. He's sucking it up for his team and making damn sure he isn't looking for attention or sympathy that will disrupt the team atmosphere of being at war.

When a guy gets a busted nose and quits, it shows that your team is being beat down by the enemy and weakens the spirit. When he shakes it off with a smile and a grimace, gets right back on it and wins, it sends the polar opposite message, it also sends a strong one to the opponent and tests their own resolve.

Thi sis what it means to lead.

This, despite some of the fancy shiny things some other players do in the NBA, is why he won back to back MVP awards, and may win the Playoff MVP award. The guy is simply a man amongst men.

C'mon, enough with the Canadian toughness BS. It's all about character and genes. Besides his parents are immigrants from South Africa where football is the name of the game and his father was a football (read: soccer) player and Nash played football until university and he was too expected to be a football player.
