MSG has 10yrs left?

Madison Square Garden Has 10 Years To Get Out

Quote:

The demolition of the*gorgeous*old Penn Station in 1963 to make way for the construction of Madison Square Garden remains one of the country's great civic tragedies. Now, New York is finally trying to rectify its mistakes: the city council has given MSG 10 years to vacate the premises.

The Madison Square Garden Company's 50-year permit to operate the arena expired earlier this year, but it has been lobbying hard for a renewal in perpetuity, sending the likes of Walt Frazier, Earl Monroe, and Spike Lee to argue the case for staying. But the city has granted only a 10-year permit, after which the Garden will be knocked down for the redevelopment of Penn Station.

In the labyrinthine process of city politics, few things have ever been so agreed-upon. The local community board voted*36-0. A zoning subcommitte voted*7-0.*The Committee on Land Use voted 18-1. And yesterday the City Council, the last stop to making it official,*voted 47-1 for the eviction heads-up.*Christine Quinn, City Council speaker and mayoral candidate,*said

“This is the first step in finding a new home for Madison Square Garden and building a new Penn Station that is as great as New York and suitable for the 21st century. This is an opportunity to reimagine and redevelop Penn Station as a world-class transportation destination.”

It's horrible timing for James Dolan and MSG, which is months away from completing a nearly $1 billion renovation to bring the cramped, seedy megalith into something resembling the 21st century.

The current arena is Madison Square Garden IV. They've moved a lot.
Just spent $1billion renovating it :cookie:

fancylad 07-25-2013 01:24 PM

you guys can put off that road trip. they won't tear it down.

They need to expand the main train station in New York so it is going to happen. A lot easier to build another arena than re-route public transport.

and the future mayor of NY is in favour of this plan

creative1mm 07-25-2013 01:39 PM

so all that money spend on renovations and they are going to tear it down?

fancylad 07-25-2013 01:48 PM

not going to happen!

The city is going to pay for the land and the Knicks made recouped their renovation costs with new sponsorship deals

NY doesn't need MSG anymore.
They have Bargs now.

I was surprised they were able to fix it up, I mean, after what Godzilla did to it and everything.

I was just there this past April and watched them play the Pacers. My first time at MSG, and it was a very underwhelming experience...the fans were so apathetic. Only small applause whenever they made a basket...the rest of the time, people were just chatting and playing with their phones.

That happens at the Rose Garden too. I think it's a trending experience in the NBA. A social get-together while you sit at a popular sporting arena.

In a game last year, I sat next to this young man, said hey what's up. He told me this was his first Blazer game. I was like right on, hope they win. After the first minute or two after tip off, I glanced over and.... yuuup, he was just glued to his Iphone. And not no NBA app, he was just tweeting people or some shit. The dude never looked up at the game at all. And me being me, well I yell a lot. Especially at the refs. Even though I was upper deck that day, I still hammer the refs as much as possible. Anyway, nearing the end of the 1st qtr. the cell phone addicted kid next to me bailed out. I guess I was being too loud. He needed a quieter place to use his smartphone. Didn't see him again for the rest of the game. More elbow room for me and the dude a seat down I guess?

I went to MSG last year to see the clips and knicks play. It was near playoff time and it was a nationally televised game and Walt Frazier was in a cow suithttp://getdangoodman.com/wp-content/...8a-575x429.jpg
I scored second row from the floor seats for 100 bucks on craigslist. it was a one off ticket and the guy couldn't get rid of it. which i kind of didn't understand.
the crowd was into it and it was an up and down entertaining game. anytime novak touched the ball the place was ready to go ape shit. he hit a couple of late clock threes to gain the lead and they did.
I thought the building was okay all things considered, but it was more the aura of the place, the legend of it that made it a neat experience for me.
