Default McGrady is Hall of Fame Talent, not Hall of Fame Player

Jeff Van Gundy and Houston Rockets’ GM Daryl Morey talk about “natural talent” and the importance of work ethic. I like how Van Gundy calls McGrady "1,000 hours of practice."

“He should be a Hall of Fame player. His talent was other-worldly. He was given a great leg up in the race against other players. He’s as close as I’ve ever seen to someone with a perfect body and a good mind...I like a lot of things about Tracy McGrady. I just wish I could have changed his practice habits and his mentality.” - Van Gundy

“McGrady was the most gifted player I’ve ever had on the roster. I do think [his talent] got in the way of Tracy’s development. Much of the game was so, so easy — and you see this in the AAU level, where they have freakishly talented players. When it’s that easy to dominate at that young age, because of your physical tools — his wing span was freakish, his size was enormous, his IQ. But my sense was that all of that did get in the way of Tracy reaching his highest heights.” - Daryl Morey

If I could create a dream player, I would probably pick Tracy McGrady's body. He had the size of a small forward, the length of a power forward (7'+ wingspan), handles of a guard, and the speed and jumping ability to keep up with anyone in the league. I remember an interview on TSN with him and VC, where VC said that TMac could probably jump higher than him.

Replace McGrady's name with Carter and nobody would think twice.

Which players do you think have made real breakthrouh this year? Rose in serious consideration for MVP, Love getting double-doubles and leading the league in rebounding, or Westbrook pushing himself to becoming the best PG in the league. Its no coincidence these three players workout together and go full-out in their training. We should throw Derozan in these workouts:

It pains me to think of how good the Raps could have been back then if only VC and T-Mac had the toughness to go along with their talent.

Could have been the next MJ and Pippen... instead both are just afterthoughts.

Neither of them should make the hall.

On some level I don't even think they care to make the hall (if you watch them play these days). Chances are their massive egos have rationalized it all internally to the point where their potential is an afterthought.

I still think that if T-Mac had stuck around for even one more year we would've been contenders for the championship. I think I remember Kobe saying something like that too, saying how he thought his Lakers would've had to battle the Raptors in the Finals if McGrady stayed.

DeMar is the second coming of McGrady, only DD has a little less pure talent and a lot more work ethic. Hopefully he stays in town long enough for us to see just how good he can be.

As much as I love demar, I don't think he will reach his scoring ability.

Carter will make the hall for three reasons: for being the best dunker of all time, for having over 20,000 career points, and most of all I think, for putting Toronto on the map (as disputed as some of you might feel about that statement).

T-Mac won't and will the remain the only scoring champ never to win a playoff series.

There's no way Carter makes the Hall. The only thing remarkable about his career is that he's the one guy scoring 20,000 that has achieved basically nothing. So many years of not even making the playoffs, and with some good rosters.

Being the leading scorer on an Olympic gold medal team is nothing? It's not the NBA HOF, it's the basketball HOF. And what years did he fail to make the playoffs with a good roster? Every year he missed the playoffs he was on a poor team. His teams have only missed the playoffs 5 times in 13 years. That's hardly a lot. If you want to look at a failure in terms of missing the playoffs, look at someone like Bosh, who has already missed the playoffs 5 times, and he's only in his 8th season.

If Dominique Wilkins is a HOFer, VC is EASILY a HOFer. He's already had far more team success than Nique had, and everyone before him who put up similar numbers to his made the hall.

Vince has acheived a tonne in terms of individual accomplishments: Rookie of the Year, great career numbers, most points in a season Raptors, most points in a season Nets, holds/co-holds a slew of Raptors, Nets, and NBA records. Really the only thing he hasn't accomplished is winning a championship, but there are loads of players in the HOF who never won a championship. There are loads of players already in the HOF with less acheivements than VC. It is not true to say he's the one guy with over 20k points who has acheived basically nothing.

Rose hands down. I fckin hate kevin love. Such a great player yet all these double doubles dont amount to wins. All these hype for nothing.
