Question "Max Deals"

I was just thinking about the NBA, and it's players, and "MAX Deals".

Now if I am not mistaken, the NBA is close to a lock out because the new Collective bargaining agreement is due soon. I know there's a players association, so I can only assume, the players have some idea what is happening.

Why the ^%^ are so many guys running around demanding the MAX salary.

How many players in any sport deserve the MAX salary??????

Like 3? Maybe 4-5 in a great era.

And we got Tony Parker, Bosh, fuck, about 20-30 NBAer's that feel it's cool to abuse their teams with Max contract demands???

WTF is wrong with this sport???

A lot of basketball players turn me off the sport. As does the ridiculous abuse of wealth and riches. A select few things keep me hanging around as a fan.

It's okay to not sign them. They'll come back to you.

Just hope a team doesn't backstab you and actually give them max money

85% of those players are in for a rude awakening this summer. They'll learn very quickly how the market really values them. It's really only going to be those second-tier, almost max guys who will get undeserved max contracts.

Guaranteed contracts are a bigger problem than this.

Would Turkeypoo have floated all season if he knew his deal could have been canceled?

Non-guaranteed contracts sound ideal, but they're just tough to swing in the NBA. You'd get guys commandeering the ball and going out to get theirs just to pad the stats and work towards the next paycheck.

The only reason they work in football is because the quarterback is really the only guy who can control the ball from play to play.

i dont think these guys think they deserve max deals per se... i just think - like any employee at any job - you want as much money as you can possibly get. that doesnt make them 'greedy', it makes them 'human'.
i for one am the laziest person on my floor... i fool around all day, i take 2 hour lunches, i surf the web as much as possible. I know i'm worthless compared to some of my co-workers who actually take their laptops home and do work afterhours. yet at the same time, i want to be paid more than them... i want as much money as i can get my grubby little hands on. i know i dont deserve it, but i want it.

before anyone here calls an NBA player greedy, ask yourself the same question. do you want to make as much money as you possibly can? do you want more money than your co-workers? do you feel like your million (or multi-million dollar) company can afford to pay you more, or give you a raise? why not, right?
exactly.
NBA players think the same exact thing. they are human.

I agree, they deserve to get paid based on the amount of money being made off of them.

but slightly ot:

Problem is it costs soo much money to be able to go to a game, get a snack and a beer or 2 and sit in decent seasts.

If a max salary was more like 10-12 millionper year it should reduce ticket prices by 5-10% or more.

Max contract is just too much. They should lower it to at least 15m. That's the only solution. I know it's tough, but I think they can survive with it...

I had a dream a few days ago of the 10-11 Raptors team in the playoffs. I just remember Bargnani being there.....and then CB4 appeared.

P.S. Bosh went back to short hair of the 06-07 days.

Haha just sayn.....

The reason they think they're entitled to max contracts is because the GM's have done a bad job of controlling their purse strings. Ultimately, the collective GM's can set the market price.

The only reason they think they deserve max is cuz they are ht eScoring leaders of their team. But honestly, if a player doesn't deserve max no GM would be stupid enough to give him Max

Wow. That's an honest post. Personally, in the past, I have accepted smaller pay cheques/scholarships in order to pursue situations I found more desireable. Others must occasionally do the same. But for the most part, I think you're right. I hate the current situation in the NBA, and relate to what SJ is saying, but I know that I can't really judge the players unless I was in that position. When I take less money, it's not an amount that translates into huge amounts of power and opportunity. When an NBA player turns down $2-3 million a year, they are turning down a lot. For example, my ideal retirement would be having the freedom to jump on a plane and watch any sporting event live, anytime I want, anywhere in the world. If you want to do that, along with travelling the world each year, you need dough. So, yeah, with that type of retirement potential on the table, I bet my philosophy would change and I'd want more cash. And it gets even more complicated when you retire before 40, and maybe have a big family and lots of friends who you want to take care of or help out.

Bosh isn't worth max, neither is tony parker, joe johnson or anyone like that. The only people worth the max are players like Kobe, lebron, wade, dwight and maybe deron williams

And I'm still wondering..... why are those players worth the max when Bosh isn't? What have they done on their own?

2 players have made the finals in the past 10 years with shady supporting casts.

Dirk and Lebron. That's it.

The rest have had signifigant help to achieve their success.

It doesn't start at max deals. Players are getting overpaid left and right. Disparity is espessially noticeable when you compare with rookie deals: on 3rd-4th year rookie earning is suddenly multiplied by 3, 5 8 times.

Players are not overpaid in light of the money that comes into the league in general. Why should MLSE rake in billions without us blinking an eye, but yet we want to bitch about what a player makes.

It's obscene money in any case, as is the case with Hollywood, the porn market, drug suppliers (legal and illegal), big fucking oil, war profiteers.

The real problem I see with this league, is the fact that it's becoming two-tiered. There are markets that are serious about winning, and a whole bunch that obviously are not. And even those that are in it to win have a difficult time in putting together a team that honors the game. The problems go much deeper than max deals, and if a lockout only looks at addressing max deals, then the problems are only going to deepen. The max deals are actually a positive in the sense that they promote stability within teams, and allow for teams to maintain an identity over long periods. The idea needs to be tweaked, but not entirely killed by any means. And then they have to figure out how to allow for teams to actually be able to milk some of that stability without always being slaves to cap space and flexibility. It's about getting the balance right, and both the players and owners need to look hard at that. Pointing fingers is going to solve nothing.
