FINALS Mavs named honorary Ohioans

I love it

“If you’re a basketball player, what could be better than winning an NBA title? Not much, but here’s one possible answer: being named an honorary Ohioan by the governor of Ohio. That’s what the Mavs received after beating the dastardly LeBron James in this year’s Finals. Congratulations.......Due to their “loyalty, integrity and teamwork,” Ohio governor John R. Kasich felt it necessary to praise the Dallas franchise for their first championship”

This is getting beyond out of hand, and incredibly pathetic by way too many people.. Including some on here.

the economy of that city was crippled by his departure. that city's foundation was lebron. it means a lot more to them than just hurt feelings and i hope you realize that.

The hurt feelings matter too, though. Lebron didn't even try to be subtle about leaving the city that loved him. He glamorized the issue and in turn slapped an entire state in the face.

I hate the way LBJ situation went, but come on... who wants to be named honorary Ohioan?

Then they have far more important things to worry about then Lebron James at this point. If you set your economy on a basketball player thats just laughable, and I'm not going to feel bad for them at all.

Cleveland fans don't hate LeBron for leaving(well they do) but there is more hate with how he left than anything else. It was a slap to the face is how they see it.

Just to clarify something in case people read the full article without clicking the link that provides context to the comment about Dirk testing free agency. Yes, Dirk did technically opt out of his contract but that wasn't necessarily to test the free agent market. As he stated on PTI, he just wanted a promise from Mark Cuban that the team would continue to make moves. Dirk went to Cuban's house and, while there, Mark assured him they were "in this together" and the Mavs would continue to look to improve. Dirk decided to stay and also took a pay cut. Dirk opting out can also be viewed as a move to lighten the luxury tax for Dallas. When Dirk re-signed, he took several million fewer dollars for the 2010-2011 season than he was going to make on the original contract. Other players have done this. Opting out doesn't always mean a player will test the market. Sometimes it involves getting a longer term contract at an earlier date.

So it's not like he really wanted or planned to test free agency. The first and last person Dirk spoke to was Mark Cuban. And he gave Mark a discount.

Edit - Also, opting out had advantages related to the new CBA. If he had simply signed an extension to his existing contract, it would have been vulnerable to changes agreed upon in the new CBA. This was why other players, like Paul Pierce, also opted out of their deals with little, if any, intention of fielding offers from other teams. Pierce also gave Boston a discount and took fewer dollars during 2010-2011 in exchange for a longer term contract.

Please define, what do you mean by pathetic?

He's brought on everything. When you tattoo chosen one on your back, you deserve kinda what you get. When you go by the name king, then yeah, expect some vitriol back.
