Fernandez confirmed it, too, with this tweet before anything was announced: "thanks all blazers fans for ur support this 3 years!! So happy to be in the best team in the nba!!!dallas!!!"
NBA draft 2011: Dallas Mavericks agree to acquire Portland Trail Blazers' Rudy Fernandez, sources say - ESPN Dallas

and the rich get richer

Belsius 06-23-2011 11:58 PM

Interesting. He is a good fit. I guess he will have a kinda similar role to Jason Terry.

Hahhhhh, when he was rumoured to be coming here last summer nobody wanted him. He was a chucker, inconsistent, slow....now he makes a great team better? If he came here, it would have been panned. lol

I don't think that's entirely true. I think a few people wanted him.

In my opinion, he has been inconsistent, though. I agree with that. But when he gets hot, look out.

He could be a decent fit in Dallas. I wonder if this is a cap move? Deshawn Stevenson is a free agent. Although Stevenson played well for the Mavs last year, he made about $4 million and might be looking for a new contract starting at the same rate. The Mavs have several other free agents to worry about; most importantly, Tyson Chandler. Fernandez only makes $2 million. Saving a few million here and there could be very important for the Mavs if a new CBA tightens cap regulations.

oh thank god

I really don't think I could hack, watching somebody getting paid millions to shoot 20% from downtown, for an entire season again.

Windex 06-24-2011 08:03 AM

Fernandez is a poor mans Vesley

Another ring for the Mavs. :cookie::cookie::cookie::cookie::cookie:

Not bad . Hes pretty good, but i doubt this will really impact their team at all. They have two good pgs, and two good sgs, and if theyre looking to go small they already have 2 good small forwards.

thought 06-26-2011 04:13 PM

he's better than stojakovic

Chiggmo 06-26-2011 04:27 PM

Doesn't make them any better.

Shifty.py 06-26-2011 05:31 PM

He'll replace Stevenson and Butler
good pickup, Portland criminally underused him
even after his great performance in olympics

He won't replace both.... I can't see how they don't bring Stevenson back after he showed up so large when it counted. I bet LBJ bought one of those t-shirts...

10gizzle 06-26-2011 07:03 PM

It makes them a little more athletic.

I think Rudy will finally have a consistent role for the first time in his career.

His ball handling, shooting and athleticism will work well with the team. Carlisle will give him a nice role in the system.

Now time to get D12 on board and we're good to go.

The new CBA might not give them a choice. The Mavs might not be able to spend as much as they want. Chandler is harder to replace and a bigger priority.

As long as bird rights remain, Dallas will have enough room to work with.

That and I think if it came down to it, Dirk would just restructure his contract to make sure Dallas can field a strong team every year.

Agreed. But a hard cap, which eliminates birds rights, presents serious problems for a number of the top teams. I'm sure Cuban is really hoping the league retains a soft cap system.

Maybe. If a type of soft cap system remains, then I could see Dirk giving back a bit of dough. However, if there is a hard cap, he might as well just keep his boat load of cash, because giving money back won't accomplish much., unless he returns about $10 mill a year, which is a lot of money to give up.

It's all just speculation until the new CBA is worked out. I think the Fernandez move is a nice insurance policy in case Cuban gets screwed by the new regulations.

TheOtherGuy 06-27-2011 08:36 AM

Lazy to check, but if that was Peja's last year on a contract, Rudy will be a good replacement. Well he's not SF, but still a younger ,more athletic and quicker addition to already great roster. And the bench goes even deeper.
