Default Marc Gasol - DPOY

I was just told that Marc Gasol will be named NBA Defensive Player of Year
Chris Vernon (@ChrisVernonShow)

And I salute the voters for getting it right.

i'm kind of surprised by this. i clearly don't watch enough grizzlies games, but i'm never considered him a big impact player on the defensive end, let alone the player with the biggest impact in the league.

voters didn't know what to do since Dwight had a bad season. Memphis has the best defence in the league and he's their best defender. Thats how Gasol won.

How did Noah not get this award cmon :/
Per 36
Gasol: DRB 5.6 DRB% 18.9 steal 1.0 steal% 1.6 block 1.8 block% 4.1
J.Noah: DRB 7 DRB% 22.6 steal 1.2 steal% 1.7 block 2.1 block% 4.4

Guess Noah didn't get it cause he missed a handful of games, making Bulls a worse defensive team then Memphis ... good on you Marc for being healthier. But from the two, Noah is the better defender- no doubt.

off topic (DPOY)

of the 2 i'd take Gasol everyday time. Way better all around player.

Memphis were a better defensive team when Noah was healthy, too.

Anyway, you mention individual numbers. Opponent numbers (synergy) and team numbers all favor Gasol.

Gasol is very solid and makes some great plays every game - but in my opinion there are about 20 other player who make plays like that.

DPOY should go to truly exceptional defenders. Watching Memphis last night I thought Gasol made handful of great blocks, but Tony Allen imo demonstrates an exceptional talent on the defensive end almost every game.

I would like to see Chris Bosh get some votes. There isn't a big in the league who guards the perimeter as well as he does.

Tony Allen plays under 27 minutes a night.

Like MVP, 6th man and other awards, i think DPOY has to go to a player who has done the most over the season. If LeBron played 26 minutes a night or missed 30 games, would he still be the MVP? I'd vote for Durant in that case...

Gasol is one of the most skilled defensive bigs in the league. He can protect the rim, cover pick and roll and bang with true post centers. Very few centers can do all three things at a high level. On top of it, he was the vocal defensive leader of the Grizzlies, the true quarterback. And he did it for 35 minutes a night for 80 games. In the 2 games he missed, the Grizzlies defense was atrocious.

His numbers may not be huge and he's not super flashy. Gasol is kind of the Big Fundamental of this generation, he's always going to run hard on defense, box out, etc, as opposed to chasing stats.
AND his name is Gasol. Which probably doesn't help his defensive image.
But I don't think anyone has done as much as him on defense this year. I think the 2nd place is very much in question (Duncan? Hibbert? Noah? Iguodala? George?) but Gasol has separated himself this year.
