Nobody had 50% of the voters vote for them (Gasol 60/121). After Gasol and Lebron, nobody even had a third of the voters vote for them. Wide open.

testament to the fact that the zone is alive and well in the league and that team defences are so much more important. His role, played well for a good team basically won him the award, that and the fact that people are fickle, they are more willing to vote for a new flavour than an old one a lot of times.

Demonstrated by the fact that Tyson Chandler received 5 votes (81 last year - he still played in 66 games). Or Ibaka having 82 votes last year and only 36 this year - somehow he fell off that much despite being the best defensive player on the top team in the West.

i agree. i think, for good, and for bad, we make way too much out of these awards. Only one that matters is the championship trophy.

Ibaka was a silly pick back then and it's a silly pick now. You have a ballot where you have to write 3 names, and you have a spot for Ibaka? I'm not sure I'd find a spot for him on a ballot with 10 names.

But some people get mesmerized by flashy plays and big numbers. Ibaka averaged 3.7 blocks last year so he nearly won. It would've been as deserved as Kobe's All-Defense selection.
This year Ibaka actually seems better on the defensive end but his numbers are down, so he gets less votes. But he shouldn't get any. He's not a top 3 defender.

As for Chandler... he missed a bunch of games.
