agreed, put him and Ross to share time at SG and move DD with AB for a big time PF. Talk about changing the culture.... defense, defense, defense!

He'll get an amir type contract.

After Gay said that DeRozan > Tony Allen, he would ask the max from the Raptors.

Anyway, you mention individual numbers. Opponent numbers (synergy) and team numbers all favor Gasol.
Yea, Tony Allen, Prince and others didn't contribute to that.
All I'm saying is, swap the two. DEFENSIVELY, Noah>Gasol. Individual numbers show their defense... all else like team stuff, opponent stuff are a team thing. Like I said Memphis players whom has much better defenders totally don't contribute to that.

Gasol deserved this award. Tony Allen imo feeds off of what Gasol is able to do, i.e. anchor that defense in the paint, which allows Allen to be far more aggressive on the defensive end.

Also, Gasol really, really covered Z-Bo and his declining legs this season. Watch him back there, he's the most active with his hands and his feet, moves his body well, really talks back there, I think the best thing I can say is that he's essentially the quarterback of that defense and because typically he plays so low he's able to see a lot of what's coming (if that makes any sense...)

Statistically, yeah, maybe he didn't have the statistical year, but from a pure defensive standpoint, this season, he was the best defensive player anchoring the best defense in the league (he's Tyson Chandler in a small market).

Agreed, offensively Gasol is better. Not defensively though. IMO it'd depends on the team make up. But if we were gunna start a team and as a no.1 option, Gasol is my option over Noah.

Did I say that?

Look, you said: Noah "missed a handful of games, making Bulls a worse defensive team then Memphis". That's just not true.

synergy? no, it's not.

judging defense by steals, blocks and rebounds is very imperfect.

But what separated him from Noah, Chandler, Bosh, Duncan? His team...which I suppose is enough if there isn't a player in the league who really stood out defensively.

From what I'm reading online - Tony Allen was a popular candidate behind Noah (internet pick), and Duncan. Gasol wasn't even mentioned in a lot of articles. Anyways - I'm not the only one who thinks Tony Allen was a viable candidate.
He made a few plays last night which got me all giddy and excited - like Dennis Rodman excited.

Bosh isn't even the best defensive player on his team.... why keep bringing him up?

No votes for Ibaka?

Because he is as good as Chandler/Gasol/Duncan/Noah. The difference being he stops guards 15 feet away from the net instead of at the rim.

He's the best pick and roll big on the defensive end in the game of basketball. Even Coach K said so - it must be true.

What play is run the most and is the hardest to stop in NBA basketball? The pick and roll.

Therefore; Chris Bosh is obviously an elite defender worthy of recognition.

he's as good as any of those players you mention and clearly better than some of them. AND he played more minutes and games than each of them.

Look, clearly, you have very different criteria than I do. I would NEVER vote for a 26 min a game player like Tony Allen unless he was FAR AND AWAY the best defender in the league. That's Euroleague minutes. I don't even know that he's better than Paul George or Iguodala, and those guys played much more. So I'd vote for them first if I was going to pick a perimeter player.

I really don't think that "he got me all giddy and excited last night" is how these awards should be judged...

I think so. I think DPOY should be an exceptional, make the fans-stand-up-out-of-their-seat defender.

Their are handfuls of players who do their job very very well, just like Gasol.

George and Iguodala are obviously both very good candidates as well.

I think Tony Allen is probably considered the best perimeter defender in the league.

Also; as good as Gasol was last night guarding Griffin (Griffin hit some tough shots) - Chris Paul was calling him out specifically on the pick and roll at the end of the game and burned him with jumpers three straight plays in a row. He was attacking him and attacking him successfully. To me the DPOY is a guy the offensive team tries their hardest not to involve in the P&R. Meanwhile - the final play was drawn up specifically to get Allen off of Paul and switched on to Crawford. It didn't work and Paul scored anyways. Obviously one play doesn't win an award or lose it...but nonetheless.

Here's Zach Lowe's pick:

MVP LeBron James and the rest of the NBA regular-season awards - Grantland

And here is Eric Koreen's

And the 2012-13 NBA awards (should) go to… | NBA | Sports | National Post

Just two opinions, that I'm tending to agree with in regards to Gasol.

When CP3 attacked Darrell Arthur, he had Gasol in the paint and then the Clippers were getting shut down...

It's not like CP3 wasn't beating Arthur, he was doing it with ease. CP3 is one of two or three best PnR guards of all time, no big man is going to stop him consistently without good help. A big man isn't supposed to defend a PnR ball handler. What big man does it by design?

Arthur and Gasol are both good PnR defenders. But only one of them is a brilliant paint defender. So it's an easy choice as far as who you want out of the paint.

Prime KG or Dwight would fail your test too, btw.

This award should have gone to either Sanders, Gasol, or Duncan IMO. I'm glad one of them got it.
