Your correct Boston is dead last right now but what even more sad is that the leafs right now or was top in the leauge but got owned by boston 2 time by a blowout. First game 6-2 and just 3 days ago Second game 7-0

Actually, Boston isn't dead last. In fact they've won their last 3 games and after a horrible start where they were hampered by an inability to score goals (four of their losses were by one goal) they now have a record of 6-7.

Hmmm... Interesting thing about this decertification threat - seriously double-edged sword there. Sure, there will be enough players to get the 130 required to submit a voting application to the NLRB. But even of those, how many are serious about decertifying and how many are just bluffing, trying to get a better deal out of the owners?

I seriously doubt the decertifiers ever get the 50%+1 they need for it to go through, which means that if the owners are serious, they just keep their offer low for the 45 day waiting period. Near the end of the period, they make an offer along the lines of what I said before (say 49%, hard lux tax, no exceptions for tax teams...) and either the players cave and take it or they go to a vote. If they go to a vote, the owners win.

Because decertification won't pass (if it even gets to a vote - that will depend on the NLRB). If it does, the antitrust lawsuits filed by the players will force the league to lift the lockout - meaning the teams will have to proceed without a CBA in place to avoid being sued for treble damages (in an antitrust lawsuit, if you sue for the year's lost wages and win, you are awarded triple what you sue for). And in that scenario, you know the superstars will get paid, and the rest of the league will pay for it. The vast majority of players take a serious pay cut in a decertified scenario. So they won't vote for it.

And then what? The union is still intact, the owners have called the bluff, and the next offer is even lower than what they were offering before (say, 45%, with a hard cap). The players have demonstrated that they don't have the guts to decertify, and now the players that voted no on the decertification will be desperate to start getting paid again. The union will demand to be allowed to vote on the owners' offer, and it will pass. If it doesn't, the season gets canceled, and we start all over again next summer, but with the players already feeling the pinch and knowing decertification is not a viable threat.

It's over as of today. The question is whether the players figure that out in time to take the current offer. I guess we'll see tomorrow, especially if Stern can throw the union heads a bone in negotiations to save their egos (and the season) in spite of the owners' hardline stance. If the players do take the current offer (or some variation thereof) the only thing that could screw it up is if the hardline owners are stronger than expected, and get a majority vote not to take the deal. Then we're following the same script as I outlined above. Anyway, tomorrow's the day - even if the owners do support Stern's current 50% plan, there's no way the hardliners let him back off his 47% ultimatum after Wednesday.

great analysis danh. from a management perspective, this has been fascinating. stern knew exactly the amount of leverage he had from the beginning, and he paced his response brilliantly. i have little doubt that this is precisely where he expected to be as of last june.

dude knows how to wield power.

David Stern is willing to meet with Billy Hunter and may be open to tweaking key system issues, in a last-minute attempt to strike a deal with the players before the league removes its offer Wednesday at 5 p.m. EST.

So far Hunter has not accepted the meeting, for reasons that are unknown.

On Saturday, Hunter reportedly told the league that the players may be willing to entertain a 50-50 deal, even though the union had just offered 51 percent for the players. It is not clear whether Hunter misspoke or tipped his hand.

The decertification movement appears to be gaining strength. Just 30 percent of players need to sign a petition to put decertification to a vote but supporters believe they may end up with the signatures of half the league.

“We want a show of force with the percentage who sign the petition,” one agent said.

On the other side, the hardline owners who appear to be tying Stern's hands remain convinced that the league has ceded too much ground to the players and wanted to give a shorter window of just 24 hours for the union to accept the 50-50 deal.

Ultimately the hardliners may be hoping the union rejects the league's proposal, after which they can demand a new CBA that more heavily favors the owners' economic interests.

Woj of Yahoo Sports is reporting that the NBAPA will accept a 51/49 BRI or a 50/50 BRI, if the system is flexible.

Woj and Chris Broussard are both saying the stumbling block is the small market hardliners who don't want to even move to 50/50. They want 47/53 BRI.

Union Willing To Reduce Share Further, Seek System Changes For Final Deal
Nov 08, 2011 5:00 PM EST

The NBPA met with player representatives and other players on Monday and spoke to the media afterward.

Derek Fisher indicated that the union is willing to come down from its 51 percent offer in exchange for changes to the system issues presented in the offer presented by the NBA to the union.

Billy Hunter said he expects to meet with David Stern before 5 p.m. EST on Wednesday. He believes that there is more than simple tweaking of the system issues that will be required in order to get a deal done.

Hunter does not, in practical effect. believe that the NBA will pull its 50-50 offer off the table after Wednesday.

"I'm convinced that they would come back and do 50-50 deal," Hunter said.

Billy Hunter is looking at making his last labour deal right now. What a great way to go out, by getting your ass kicked and not realizing it.
