The NBA and NBPA met for over 24 hours on Tuesday and Wednesday.

While no major breakthrough was made, two sources say progress was made in terms of the split of basketball-related income.

The two sides have moved closer to a “50-50 split, give or take a point with ranges based on revenue performance,” one source said.

'System issues' have been at the forefront of the talks and have been cited as a bigger issue in getting a deal done. Included in this area of talks are the luxury tax and the limitation of Bird Rights. The players believe a strict luxury tax will create a de facto hard salary cap.

George Cohen said that the 24 hours of talks over the past two days have been "direct and constructive."

“I think everyone is expecting miracles. It is still going to take some time even with a mediator,” one league executive said. “I don’t think Cohen has solved disputes in two days.”

The two sides will reconvene on Thursday at 2:00 PM EST.

Owners Propose 'Bonus Pool' Incentives To High-Achieving Players On Rookie Contracts
Oct 20, 2011 3:19 PM EDT

A "bonus pool" of money for high-achieving young players with performance-based incentives is being proposed by the owners.

Rookie-scale players who make All-Star teams and win Rookie of the Year would receive incentives under the proposal.

The union wants players who have out-earned rookie-scale contracts to be paid more quickly than the current system allows.

Players such as Derrick Rose and Blake Griffin would be beneficiaries of this new arrangement.

The NBA and NBPA are close to agreement on a compromise on the annual midlevel exception, say sources.

The deal would start at $5 million per year, with annual raises over three years.*

Two weeks ago, the NBA was proposing a $3 million starting salary for the midlevel.

In previous days, the owners and players agreed on starting the midlevel exception at $4.8 million.

It's insane (amazing?) for an almost-70 man to have 16 hours+ negotiating sessions for three days in a row.
Is it only the flu?

meetings over, no deal made, no further negotiations scheduled, bunch of bull, this is really getting annoying. Owners said they are willing to go 47 to 50%, players best offer is 52.5% -___-

NEW YORK — NBA owners and players ended negotiations after about five hours Thursday, and no further discussions were scheduled.

"Ultimately we were unable to bridge the gap that separates the two parties," NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver said. "We understand the ramifications of where we are. We're saddened on behalf of the game."

I'd like to congratulate everyone involved.
Funny. Very funny.

You'd think as a union, your 1st responsibilty is to make sure your membership keeps receiving their massive paycheques.

I hope all the players enjoy their time making 1/4 of what they should be while playing in North Scrubovia.

By the way, David Stern got the flu and went home.

Did you think they were going to settle in October? lol

Watching the NBAPA press conference right now on NBATV and they said there is no way they'll accept a system like Hockey. lol

Owners saying no further meetings until there is a precondition that the players agree to 50/50

But it amazes me how they're about 2% apart on BRI and this can't be worked out. Pretty fucked up!

Yup, that's a pretty outlandish concept, that the people who put up the money and own the teams should dare split revenue in half. And yes, it does surprise me, only because it is about nothing but ego and saving face. When they finally sign, no one is going to be starving or scraping by like us regular folks. They're all getting rich. What else is there but a misguided notion that losing pay forever is better than "losing" this negoitiation.

Here is a nice play by the owners that the players are making all too easy.

Stern has said on multiple occasions what is going to happen, if you listen carefully. The mediator was never going to get it done. The owners want to change the system, and the players were never going to go for that until they get really desperate. Stern has said in a few interviews: 'Once games are missed, the offer isn't getting better - at that point the owners have to recoup some losses.' Sure, the owners would waffle about maybe meeting the players at 51%, but they would only offer a BRI split they know the players won't take. Remember, the BRI split is only 1 of 3 big issues here - and the owners are going to be sure to win 2 of them by pressuring the union in a long lockout.

Right now, 50-50 and a 'hard' luxury tax would never be passed by the players. So the owners, smart cookies that they are, will ask again in December. And they WILL eventually get what they want - more parity and especially more controlled costs - a low BRI split and a hardish cap. I don't know if I'd be comfortable betting that the players even receive 50% after this.

The owners would do a 49-51 BRI band split. In other words if the league does well the players get 51%, if it does poorly they'd get 49%.

The players want a 50-53 (possibly 52.5%) BRI band split.

Now, is it that difficult to say ok let's just do a 50-52% band on the BRI, double and triple the tax (escalating), essentially making it a hardcap since who the fuck would pay triple the tax? Then you deal with exceptions/Bird rights and get this party started...

The players wouldn't accept a hardish cap yet. Also, if you are the owners and you can get what you described there, but with a lower BRI split by waiting a couple months, why rush?

It smells a little of bargaining in bad faith on the owners' part. It's one thing to demand that all teams have a better chance of making some money, it's another thing to want to ensure big profits in spite of themselves, and to risk damaging the game in the process. And frankly the perception that is coming across isn't that far off from what Bryant Gumbel was saying. There seems to be no respect for the union, and instead a desire to break that union, and it's hard to see where that helps the game.
