Ye, they said they are far apart in every area and the losses of games will have to be accounted for in negotiations, well i guess we can just talk about what pick we can get in the draft

During Monday's talks, sources say the NBA has been determined to reconfigure a system that will allow the players to accept a 50-50 split of basketball-related income.

One details that has emerged is a new, shorter mid-level exception, according to a report from David Aldridge. The owners were pushing for an elimination of the mid-level

Elimination of the Mid-Level Exception? I don't know about that, it really comes in handy in the Association mode.

If by "among the least paid" you mean not playing in the MLB, you are right. However, if you want to compare to the other 2 out of the big 4 sports, they will still come out well ahead. going from 57% to 50% is only a 12% reduction in salary - that means the big contracts in the NBA go from a range of 21 (Kevin Garnett level) to 25 million (Kobe Bryant level) to a range of 18.5 to 22 million.

In no way does this bring the superstars down anywhere NEAR the NHL - whose highest paid player is 12 million (ie what Andrea Bargnani will make in the final year of his current contract) - and still right around the NFL's highest paid players (and that's even being generous, as the NFL tends to structure contracts with peak salaries and a much lower average salary over the contract, and the Forbes article below is discussing the single year salaries). Note how Manning's annual average is closer to 18 than his peak 23 million. A 5-year NBA contract peaking at 23 million would start at around 17 million and average closer to 20 million.

Quote:
Manning, a four-times most valuable player in the NFL who agreed to a five-year $90-million contract with the Colts last month, is expected to earn $23 million in total compensation for 2011.

St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford is second on the list with expected earnings of $18.4 million and New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is third at $18 million.

Yeah, but you can't compare that way - those 16 games are attended by 50,000+ people and watched by many times the broadcast audience of the NBA.

The pay is relative to the value provided, and it could be argued that NFL superstars actually provide more value than the NBA stars. Anyway, there are far too many variables if you want to delve into that, and they could impact the comparison both ways, so I kept it simple. The pay is comparable even after the BRI reduction.

It should also be noted that the 5th highest paid player in the NFL got 15 million - which is a far steeper drop off than what is seen in the NBA, with many players making close to 20 million.

Things have changed drastically for a lot of people as far as the economy goes. Not too many people can find a job at GM to turn a screw in a bumper all day for $75,000. These guys can't be any different.

I'm not siding with players like most do. If the players want to start their own league, drop 300/400/500 million of their own money for a franchise. Then when the millionaires you are paying complain, just keep shelling out more like a good owner should, regardless of the circumstances.
There is a trend down in US household incomes since 2000 (rich or poor). They have escaped this kind of cut for 11 years. It's time they realized the US gravy trian has slowed down for most people, and it has to and will affect them.

And one should take into account the career span (and life span) of an NFL player compared to any other sport.

check this from Wiki about 1998-99 NBA Lockout:
1998?99 NBA lockout - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:
On December 23, Stern announced that he would recommend canceling the season if there was no deal by January 7, 1999. As Stern's deadline approached, the NBPA showed signs of division from within. Highly paid players were seen as the ones most affected by the disputed issues, rather than the union's membership as a whole. Agent David Falk, who was considered an influential voice for the players, represented NBPA president Patrick Ewing and nine players on the union's 19-person negotiating committee. The NBPA scheduled a meeting in New York City on January 6, where players would vote on a proposal by the owners that the committee had recommended opposing. Several players, including Shaquille O'Neal and Hakeem Olajuwon, wanted the vote to be conducted by secret ballot, while others indicated a desire to return to competition regardless of how the vote went. Kevin Johnson stated that most players "were just ready to throw down [fight] Wednesday at our meeting if an agreement hadn't been reached." Faced with a splintering union, Hunter moved to resume talks with Stern. On January 6, the day before Stern's deadline, he and Hunter reached an agreement, which was ratified by the NBPA later that day and by the NBA Board of Governors on January 7.

Hunter To Meet With Players Thursday
Oct 11, 2011 12:28 PM EDT

Billy Hunter plans to meet with players in Los Angeles on Thursday.

“Unfortunately, we probable need to miss a few games in order for [the owners] to be convinced that there is resolve among the players,” Hunter said. “My players are not going to fall apart. I spent 2½ years getting them ready.”

I just find it funny, the longer this drags on, the less money the players make.
Reading the articles and listening to the news about the numbers is just ridiculous for the players stand point.
I'm pretty sure we're 'only' going to lose 2-4 weeks of this season.
Anything more is just a catastrophic failure on the players part.
